Channel 4 commissioning Page 3

Commiserations, but try to stay calm when you see what does get commissioned!

REJECTED. Shane Allen said it 'wasn't funny enough'. Gutted.

For some reason, I didn't expect feedback to be that frank. By the way, how did you get your script to Shane Allen?

He reads the scripts on the short list for the comedy labs and picks his favourites. Mine wasn't one of them.

If Hung Out can make it through the 'short list' phase (A flat-sharing sitcom about people in their 30s who are failing in life), then God help us all...

Yes, that's the bitterness talking.

So I'm still yet to have a writing credit for anything, on any medium. Ho hum.

Do you know when the next Comedy Lab deadline will be? I've been writing my sitcom for years, I haven't got an agent, and I'm just bursting to get it read by someone.

it is said it's virtually impossible to get a new writer/sitcom on TV unless it is absolutely outstanding as they have to cut out an established program to insert 'yours'

Hey, you've got to keep dreaming.

Yes that is true - everything on TV has to be absolutely outstanding nowadays

Yes that is true - everything on TV has to be absolutely outstanding nowadays

Then why isn't it?

With the amount of writers trying to get into the biz, there should be no duff shows.

You can be very caustic at times, Marc.

But it's silly to expect wall to wall greatness, it's impossible. People don't set out to make bad TV shows/films/books and so on, but of course sometimes that's exactly what they'll be left with at the end. It's not an exact science, so even the best can create things that don't quite work.

There are too may writers trying to get into the biz is probably the problem. Lol. Comedy wise though there aren't that many great writers around.

I've said it before, but a real problem is the lack of decent produces/directors. Whether it's Newsjack or The IT Crowd or the latest BBC3 sitcom, the problems could all be solved by the writers being given more guidance and instruction.

Or not always guidance and direction... sometimes just a bit of respect. :)

or just a contract

...or more creative freedom.

And less "yes, great script, Mr Writer but we as producers need to feck around with it, just to add our mark."
