He was only in prison for 18 weeks? This seems pretty good evidence against the effectiveness of short sentences. He came out completely nuts.

Absolutely. Prison doesn't "work", short term, unless the aim is to restrict the ex-con to continuing a life of crime, with added 'university of crime' experience and a massive grudge.
Must admit, I'm enjoying the adventures of Mr Moat. It's rather fun, especially now his mom's weighed in saying he'd be better off dead. Well done newspapers, that's going to help his mental state!
