As long as people do their community service and don't skive off or get sent home it is by far the better option. That nutty shooter seems proof of it.

Prison should only be for the most dangerous unsocialisable criminals. And even then with an aim of returning them to the community in some form.

What about the need for justice to be seen to be done. The trouble with community service etc, is to the general public it looks like a soft option.

I worked with some people on it. It's not that easy, not that easy at all.

But the public perception, rightly or wrongly, is that it is easy.

I know, I know. The only problem with democracy is the people who get the vote.

Violent crims should be routinely micro-chipped so we can find them later. Or fitted with a self-destruct device.

I suppose that's only a step up from tagging. But at sometime one's debt to society is paid.

But at sometime one's debt to society is paid.

Sure, there's a human rights issue, but if the crime is of such a severity that the public is in danger later of, I for one would like to keep track of them, if necessary. Compared to execution, it's pretty tame.

Or to be kinder a knock-out device?

Or to be kinder a knock-out device?

You're so thoughtful. Perhaps we could implant some secret happy pills, which can be released at the appropriate moment to make them cheerfully give themselves up?

So how will the Moat case end?

Will he be arrested?
Or shot (dead)?
Give himself up?
Or indeed, escape?

I would have thought shot dead by police.

Or possibly more likely by himself when the police find him.

But the police are being so shit I now wonder if they ever bloody will find him. He seems so thick and bad at hiding, so they really are taking their time.

This.

Heads should roll for this. The prison he was in told the police his ex girlfriend was in danger. In that case, why did they let him out? And why did the police do apparently sweet fanny adams to stop him? :S

Suicide I suspect, possibly Lucan stylee

WTF? Sick

NASA's new mission: Building ties to Muslim world

You'd be hard-pressed to find an American who doesn't know that the "S" in NASA stands for "Space." Since the race to the moon in the 1960s, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has been one of the most storied agencies in the U.S. government. Now, under President Obama, its mission is changing -- and space isn't part of the story.

"When I became the NASA administrator, (Obama) charged me with three things," NASA head Charles Bolden said in a recent interview with the Middle Eastern news network al-Jazeera. "One, he wanted me to help re-inspire children to want to get into science and math; he wanted me to expand our international relationships; and third, and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science, math, and engineering."

From moon landings to promoting self-esteem: It would be difficult to imagine a more dramatic shift in focus for an agency famous for reaching the heavens. Bolden's words left supporters of space exploration astonished. "Everyone had the same impression: Is this what he is spending his time on?" says a Republican Hill aide who tracks the space program. "A lot of people are very upset about it."
