I get your gist now. Your question is basically "Why are there so many sitcom scripts having live read-throughs at the expense of sketches and plays which have more chance of commercial success?"

Seems to me the opposite's true. I've been to tons of live sketch shows at comedy clubs, Edinburgh etc, but less than two sitcom readings.
