Wimbledon Page 10

Fitting that Roger broke the record at Wimbledon. Very long, tense match. Great stuff for Fed to have the GS record, #1 again and to break Agassi's tournament win record. It's all good for him, unfortunately somebody had to lose. Poor Roddick, I sincerely feel for him. He played out of his mind. Just never broke down ('cept for that 2nd set tiebreak) and maybe deserved the win (shades of Rafter-Sampras 2000 in that 2nd set tiebreak. That could haunt Roddick for a long time, he had his chances).

Roddick played the absolute best match he's played in his life, his serving was incredibly consistent- high %, his groundstrokes were almost faultless, forehands deep and plenty of variety in placement, mixed it up well, great gameplan - very well excecuted, volleying for the most part very well (something not natural to him), and yet still came up just short.

Still, huge props to him for what he has delivered in semi and this match, I hope he can be this strong also in the hardcourt tournos and get another shot at a slam. Despite fighting back very well to take it the distance he was the first to run out of steam, Federer raised his level a little in the final set, but I think he outlasted Roddick as opposed to plain outplaying him. You have to damn near play a perfect match to beat Federer at Wimbledon, Roddick did just that and still couldn't hoist the trophy. Wasn't much in it. Not the best ever match/final qualitywise, but the tension and pressure on both men was huge at times. Epic final set.

It was one of the more harsher ones for the defeated man. My 'most gutted' final was when Sampras beat Goran in '98. I was pretty gutted for Rafter when he lost to Goran, but equally excited/chuffed for Goran eventually winning the big one, plus watching that match as a neutral was different, I guess. Roddick can take Goran as an inspiration I suppose- playing like this he has a good chance of winning this title one day, in similar style to him. My auntie (who loves tennis too and got me really interested at an early age) said McEnroe beating Jimbo in '84 was the worst final for her.

I both agree and disagree with you Jackson. The final was thrilling and was the longest on record but it was conversely the least entertaining. Why? Because both men were serving machines, neither could break each other's service.

It became a war of attrition with everyone waiting for one man to break. Shame it was Roddick though.

Still better then the predictable William's sisters final. Zzzzz

Fair enough, yes a very dominant serving performance from both. Not the best in terms of quality, but captivating and tense nevertheless (OK so nobody looked like dropping serve in that final serve, but it was intriguing to see who'd hold out, I must say with those break points at 8-8 Roddick looked a little more likely for a spell.

Interesting that the pundits were referring to this as a classic. I just found it rather annoying. It's not actually that entertaining watching two men match each other, serve for serve, for what was, essentially, a seven set match. There was no real finesse or excitement about it. Roll on US Open, and Come On Andy! (Murray, natch).

Apologies Neil, Jackson is also a popular first name - as in Jackson Pollock and Jackson Brown - see that's at least two.

I will call you Neil from now on (or love dumplings if you give me a fiver).

You can PM Aaron who would be able to change it for you.

I'm not THAT bothered as to PM Aaron*. :P

*Only jesting, mate. Seriously, though I'll leave username the way it is it's no big deal really.

Fine... Jackson. ;)

Ah, good. At last some proper sport starts on Monday. None of this football tomfoolery.

I can look forward to everybody wittering on about how they hate Andy Murray because of one off the cuff remark about the England football team four bloody years ago.

Jesus, tennis already? There's already next to nothing on telly. The schedules are going to be completely barren now!

That is the downside, of course. Mind you, once the group stages at the world cup are done, that'll free them up a bit.

No English men in the singles this year.

Does it matter?

When on Earth will that be?

End of next week-ish?
