Obsession with Reading out Sitcoms?

What is this obsession with reading out sitcoms? Are sitcoms the most marketable form of writing, because I don't think they are.

What exactly do you mean by 'reading out sitcoms'?

I think hiring some actors, a room and then charging writers to get their scripts read is somewhat marketable.
