A Man Walks into a Bar

A Man Walks into a Bar is a place for new comedy writers to get their work read by professional actors and commented on by an audience of like minded creative types, including reps from leading production companies. It takes place monthly in an informal setting (a room above a pub just off Great Portland St) conducive to people sharing and talking about their ideas. The audience gets a giggle and the chance to voice their opinion and the writers get some valuable feedback and further inspiration. The usual form is two half hour sitcom scripts, each followed by half an hour's worth of chat. Script. Chat. Script. Chat.

We're looking for scripts for our next event on the 8th of July (a date that doesn't clash with the football). We'll have a rehearsed reading a few days before the event, so entries for consideration must be received by the 1st. Send your scripts to: amanwalksintoabarlondon@gmail.com

...he says "Ouch!", 'cos it's a public bar.

Would the writer be expected to be at these readings, because I would not likely be able to go, if my work was chosen.

Yes. We'd expect the writer to come along and respond to the actors' and audience's comments and questions.

I'd be interested in the name of the pub and the name of the street it's on! Also start time? I would prefer to be in the audience at least once before submitting any material, as maybe other "members of this site" would also? Well, the London based ones anyway.. Is that possible?

You know, you and I could be identical twins, uncanny resemblance!

Cheers.

Oi what about a response to queries from us would be losers?

Lost again? :(

Well this seems to be exactly the same thing as London Comedy Writers. I suppose it's useful fir people who can't make tuesdays but otherwise why don't they work together?

Sorry about the late response. It'll be starting at 7.30pm on Thursday the 8th of July, in the upstairs room of The Mason's Arms pub, which is on the corner of Great Portland Street and Devonshire Street.

We have to assume so, if we don't get a reply.

I am losing before I begin! :(

My question was:

"I'd be interested in the name of the pub and the name of the street it's on! Also start time? I would prefer to be in the audience at least once before submitting any material, as maybe other "members of this site" would also? Well, the London based ones anyway.. Is that possible?"

I guess I'll email the question to them... maybe they just can't be arsed to come back on here to look for responses?

*edited* *Especially for sad old gits like me that can't see!*

Geek ah, that's better!

"Mildred, where's my dog with the slippers.. mmm, here's my pipe... good-o!"

Is there a deadline for this? And do the sitcoms have to be half hour? (would a 20 minute one suit, for example)

Lastly, do you have a website?

First up, sorry for not getting back to people sooner.

The deadline for this month is a week today: the 1st of July.

There'll be a rehearsal early the following week, which gives the writers a chance to meet-up and work with the actors, which will then be followed by the reading proper on the Thursday.

This is a new event. We've had a couple of dry runs which have gone down really well, and now we're opening it up for other writers to contribute. We hope to keep momentum behind it as a regular fixture, so even if you miss this month's deadline they'll be another opportunity next month.

Ideally, we'd like 30 min submissions. We've found that two pieces of half-an-hour, broken up with beer and chat, is a pretty good balance.

Website in development. Hope this makes sense.

P.S. If anyone's interested in example scripts that have been read at previous events, just email us and we'll send them out.
