Quote: Kevin Murphy @ June 13 2010, 2:28 PM BSTCan you imagine somebody starting a BCG thread apologising for Michael McIntyre on behalf of all English people?
Yes, I can imagine. Do the English feel a sense of shame he has brought, by association, to their nation?
England has had more succesful genocides then any other country.
We don;'t really do shame.

Historians are still debating whether the incoming Anglo-Saxons massacred or simply enslaved the Romano-British, but I am struggling to think of a more recent example of genocide.

I doubt it.
Do the Scots feel that Boyle reflects badly on them?

It is not quite the same thing, because not every third McIntyre joke is about being Scottish. (And in any case I am not sure either of his parents were English; if he followed the example of most of our other second generation comedians his material would be all about what it is like to be a Canadian living in England.)
Quote: catskillz @ June 13 2010, 3:28 AM BSTWould the people on here sticking up for Frankie still support him if he was making jokes about black people?
Exactly! Of course they wouldn't, not if there was a race or black culture element! This point shows up their argument to be totally flawed, and shows them to be hypocrites. You want edgey controversial jokes, then there's no more edgy controvesial than racist material. Plenty black topical stuff out there they could do, guns, knives, drugs, sex, gangs, crime, jails, schools, politics, PC, positive discrimination and of course sport.
And so why was Bernard Manning simply not being "edgey" when he told those jokes? Wasn't Manning simply one of the bravest, most topical and edgy, and free speaking comedians we had? What IS the difference?? Boyle is very like Manning, only he isn't allowed to do race now, but I always get the feeling that he wants to. Same with Connolly at times, he veers very close to it. (I don't include Davidson, funny bloke, but it was mainly crude caricature.) But Manning was a real craftsman, at his best, he has NEVER got the credit he deserves because of our paranoid liberal culture, which is making hypocrites out of confused people now. Good evening.
Quote: Alfred J Kipper @ June 13 2010, 10:26 PM BSTWhat IS the difference??
Mainly: Bernard comes across as a scumbag who believed what he was saying to be true, whereas Frankie comes across as a civilised human being who can see the difference between joke and truth and plays on it.
How about relevance? Humor has always been used as a tension breaker, a way of informing about the unspeakable.
I remember after a famous naval defeat in the 100 years the only man who could tell the King of France was his jester. So yes comedy can cover race; and it does from ONF&H to TDUP. Often written by white comics.
The thing that some people seem to miss. Is making endless jokes about how diferent, inferior and unpleasant a minority stops being funny. And just becomes hate.
Bernard Manning abusing black waitresses or cheering on The Rodney King Beating before paying police officers. Hows that funny? Hows that anything other than reinforcing prejudice.
Bigotted comedy is utterly lazy and it's not really comedy.
It's not about liberal elites. It's about good manners, respect and politeness.
I'm sure Mr Kipper joshes and has fun with his friends. I suspect he doesn't spend solid hours insulting them and talking about the size of their penises.

? Where?
Tasmania, Ireland, Bangladesh, the Thugees etc.

That's a band, you silly sausage.
Look up Genocide mr SJ
Unless my relatives are wrong there are a few Irish left etc and look up Thugees too and Tasmania was a Genocide issue true but not 'English' really!
I did. It isn't usually an attempt to kill every single member of a race. But rather to kill an unusually large number, remove them from their lands and destroy or subsume their culture. Or do you really want to play the dreary game of swop the dictionary quote?

Has there ever been a 100 percent succesful genocide. There's even one timelord left. Or so he tells us every week.
