They've only increased the squad size by one since the days before there were no substitutes allowed. Now a game can inlvolve 14 players for each team I would think there should be a minimum of 25 players per squad.
23 is plenty, I think it should be 20. The number of potential games played hasn't increased for some time. Half the teams there will only play 3 games! Squad management and discipline has to be a part of the process, and if a team was to lose two or three men to suspensions then having a tighter squad would affect them. If they had a bigger squad there wouldn't be much hardship for their players' bad behaviour.
I'd like to see it reduced to 20, then coaching and discipline would have to play a bigger part. I've always thought that the big winners, Brazil, Argentina, Germany and especially Italy have got away with murder at times because they have great players able to slot in when other players have been suspended. Not fair!
