British Comedy Guide

Longtime lurker, fifth time poster

3 years, 2 months ago: discovered this site after discovering Green Wing after discovering the Netherlands (or Holland to you British types). It turned out that the Netherlands had already been discovered some time earlier, and the Dutch had even got to Australia before the Brits. All this worshipping the mother country and her television output was clearly misplaced. (It also turned out Green Wing was shown in Australia on pay TV, which no-one has.)

3 years, 1 month ago: fixed TV reception so that BBC1 and BBC2 weren't headache inducing. Discovered HIGNFY, NMTB, M&W etc. etc.

2 years, 9 months ago: started Dutch class so forced to watch Dutch TV. Discovered De Lama's, Draadstaal etc. etc.

2 years, 5 months ago: created an account after much lurking, clearly with the intention of posting.

21 months later: First post!!!! In the Foreign Comedy forum Unimpressed

Today: finally introduces herself. Hiiii! Wave

Anyway, I grew up with the ABC in Australia (hence lots of BBC exposure, usually several years after the UK, and a lot more Goodies exposure than your average Brit, so I hear), and have now found that comedy is basically the only thing that relaxes me. I try to get to live standup whenever I can, but I don't live in Amsterdam so it's a) mostly Dutch-language b) once a month at the most. Saw Paul Merton's Impro Chums last weekend in Amsterdam in their only show outside the UK which was brilliant.

I don't write sketch/sitcom, but do enjoy the "humourous" columnists in the UK papers and have been told that my expat blog is funny, which is annoying as it wasn't supposed to be funny. I'm now trying out some different things, taking some risks, and trying to laugh at my very strange expat life. If anyone else is interested in that form of writing, then please let me know -- I don't think there's a place for it in Critique and I'd love to swap ideas every now and then.

Hi :) Unlike you, I stumbled upon it and wrote my introduction almost immediately. Nice to meet you though :)

Hi Nick! Unfortunately I am one of those people whose offline shyness also manifests online -- I like to observe and check the place out for a while first. After three years, I finally feel comfortable enough to stand up and do the whole "My name's nicamy and I'm a comedyholic" thing ...

Hello! No need to be shy. :)

Welcome.

There are many blogs by "expat women" (usually expat wives) based in various countries. I'll PM you some links.

'ello, 'ello, ello.

Lonely wives in foreign climes, neglected by their diplomat husbands.

Home all day bored, looking for a little excitement in their otherwise humdrum lives?

Copy me in on those links if you would !

;)

Welcome.

Schtum!

I won't tell anyone else!

Hi again and thanks for the welcomes!

Thanks, Kenneth, for the links. However, that is exactly my problem with expat blogging -- it's all expat wives who do a lot of "oooh, I saw tulips!" and "oooh, everything's turned orange!!" and "oooh, here's a picture of my expat cat!!!". I have to say the blogs from Kenneth were better than that though.

As I mentioned (complete with typo), I'm more influenced by columnists (e.g., Charlie Brooker, and I just finished Alan Coren's collected columns), which has put me on the fringe of the expat blogging sphere in NL (because without cat photos I'm not doing it right). In any case, those of us who have moved for work really shouldn't have the time to be blogging ... Errr

for those of you who wonder what an ex-pat cat may look like- be sure to visit

Hello, and welcome to BCG.

Have you managed to get to see them? :)
