It helps prevent dental erosion. According to the British Dental Health Foundation, it makes drinks go straight to the back of the mouth and cuts down contact between the acid in the drink and the teeth.

Intriguing.

Somebody should hand out straws to guests on the Jeremy Kyle show then.
