Apparently FIFA have introduced a new rule that will disallow players from faking before striking the ball when taking penalties, the way John Aldridge used to do, because they've deemed it unsportsmanlike. As someone who used to do that very thing when I played, I don't agree with the banning.

All faking in sports should be banned unless it's a feint in boxing.

It should be perfectly allowable. Most people can't pull it off in high pressure situations, so it benefits the 'keeper more than the striker.

In fairness this is basically the same thing.

I think it's basically the same as a dummy or faking a shot or pass in open play.
But a Penalty is a slightly different case.

This is often true.

Feeling a need to depress myself at England's desperate penalty shoot-out record I thought I'd look back and see how it all stacked up with kicks taken during matches also. It makes grim reading...
Since the World Cup quarter-final against Cameroon in Italy in 1990 England have had 25 penalties in active play and of these, 18 were scored and 7 were missed. 72% success rate.
In penalty shoot-outs they've won once and lost SIX!
West Germany 1990 (Italy)
England scored three of their five penalties in their first penalty shoot-out competition. Stuart Peace and Chris Waddle both failed to find the back of the net. 60% success rate.
Spain 1996 (Wembley)
Four kicks taken and all scored as England won their first (and so far only) penalty shoot-out as they beat Spain 4-2 in the quarter-finals at Euro96. 100% success rate.
Germany 1996 (Wembley)
Five scored out of six pens with Gareth Southgate missing out in the Euro96 semi-final. 83% success rate.
Belgium 1998 (Morrocco)
Three succesful penalties and two missed in the largely forgotten 1998 World Cup warm up. Rob Lee and Rio Ferdinand were the players who failed score. 60% uccess rate.
Argentina 1998 (France)
This second round tie saw England again score three and miss two with Paul Ince and David Batty the culprits this time. 60% success rate.
Portugal 2004 (Portugal)
This Euro2004 quarter-final clash saw England score five times and miss twice more through David Beckham and Darius Vassell. 71% success rate.
Portugal 2006 (Germany)
Another competition and another quarter-final with Portugal. This time England converted just one penalty with Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher all missing. 25% success rate.
This all means that England have had a total of 56 penalties and missed an astonishing 19 representing a very poor 66% success rate.
Jeez.
If you can bear it you can look at the details on these excellent sites:

Yeah, I remember that David Batty missed penalty well ...
Brian Moore: Quickly Kevin, you know him best, will he score?
Kevin Keegan: Yes!

I don't think there is anything wrong with a pause before a spot kick. It works for some and not for others. If Henry is taking a penalty he will probably throw it in and the ref won't see anything before the ball hits the net.
(Yep, still bitter over the handball incident)
I'm still bitter about the Henry incident as well. The Ireland fans would've travelled in droves to South Africa, creating a great atmosphere. I know Ireland fans are still hurting, but don't forget, France would've still been favourites to qualify, even if that handball hadn't happened. If it had gone to penalties, my money would've been on France.
Personally I think that a player can take a penalty any way he likes as long as it's a single kick at goal.
The feinting and stutter is actually a fairly tricky skill which is why so few do it. It's an unnatural way of approaching the ball especially in a pressurised situation.
Because it is a skill and a singlke kick, it should be allowed. It's not the takers fault that the goalkeeper commits himself by diving early.
I thought they were supposed to ban that pausing during a penalty mallarky years ago! It's a total con. I'm afraid it IS the p*** taker's fault that the keeper dives early, because that's exactly what that contrick is designed for. The art of penalty taking is supposed to be to beat the keeper with the ball, not get rid of the keeper then beat an empty net with the ball, surely? The goalie isn't allowed to run forward and put him off so why should the penalty taker be allowed just to put the keeper off??? I thnk it usually shows a lack of confidence as well in his ability to score normally having to do that ridiculous stop starty thing.
It's yet another disgusting foreign practice that's become the norm over here! Diving's okay, conning the keeper's okay, hand ball's okay, piling into the ref to get someone sent off's okay, that's foreign football for you folks, do you really think that's sexy?? But proper tackling as invented in England isn't okay, it isn't sexy because it stops the sexy foreigner from sauntering along in that jaunty, carefree, sexy way of his!! The trouble with football is that isn't being run by the nation that knows it best anymore, it's been hijacked by the foreigners and they've made it a game for cheating, play acting long haired girls!!! And they're spiteful little girls too because they do everything to stop its proud inventors from winning or from hosting the world cup. 'Oh lets give it to Mexico for the 16th time, they're sexy people they are, they gave us the Mexican wave.' They make me puke!

I actually agree with a lot of what you say but I still feel that a penalty aspect is fair game for the stutterers. Having said that, John Aldridge used to really annoy me the way he'd take a kick and he got his just desserts by being the first person to miss a pen in an FA Cup Final.
Goalkeepers do seek to gain an advantage by moving and I'd ask you, when did you see that rule effectively applied? One kick, one goal - how he ball gets there is of no consequence.
The act of kicking a ball takes a fraction of a second. There are no flicks, back flips or cartwheels involved. It is a single contact between foot and football towards a netted-rectangle 12 years away. Simple.
When I was a goalkeeper I just ignored the run up and concentrated on the ball and watched which direction it went. At least I would have a chance of stopping it as I was going to dive in the right direction. OK, I didn't save every one but my record wasn't that bad.
Oh, and while we're at it, look at Jerzy Dudek's outrageous behaviour in the Champions League final in 2005. It's appalling gamesmanship...and I'm speaking as a Liverpool fan!
Yes that was bad and even worse was your other goalie, Grobelaar with his jelly legs routine in another Euro final - disgusting, but there you are - both these men were foreigners!
