British Comedy Guide

What the hell WAS this comedy?

This has been bothering me on and off for seriously 10 years or so. I'm 26, and sometime around the late eighties to mid-nineties (at a guess) I remember watching a TV show that I used to love. I can't remember what it was called, and remember very little about it, other than I think it was set in a hospital and used quite surreal humour, and possibly had an element of sketch show to it. What I DO remember though is that the series had a comic book adaptation which, in hindsight, seems quite a rare thing so I was hoping maybe it would trigger someones memory. I remember being quite young and wanting to buy it and flicking through only to realise the humour seemed more adult than to my age (references to sex etc) so I wasn't allowed to buy it, but I remember the comic had a few pages dedicated to certain characters through rather than one story.

Anyone have any idea what show this was? I don't have any particular want to watch it again or anything - it's just been driving me crazy!

If it helps, there are two moments that have stuck in my mind - one where a character is doing a manical laugh towards screen and then walks directly into the camera, and another where a guy has an over-sized heart prop beating in his chest at a meal or something.

Was it British? The only hospital sitcom I can remember from that era is Surgical Spirit, but I'm not sure if that fits with the other things you remember.

There was a mad Australian comedy show set in a hospital, kind of a spoof of "Young Doctors" which featured lots of blood, gore and scantily clad nurses IIRC, think it was from the late eighties, early nineties, not sure what it was called though ("Blood on the Ward" or something like that?)

Just done a Wiki and the one I'm thinking of was "Let the Blood Run Free"

Sounds v much like Garth Marenghi's Dark Place

Might it have been ASYLUM?

The Edgar Wright-directed oddity, featuring early appearences from Simon Pegg, Jessica Stevenson, Julian Barrat and co-written by David Walliams.

Possibly?

I can't find any reference of a comic book, but I believe it was infact Let The Blood Run Free! Thanks Tony for ending my misery lol.

Sorry for not remembering that it wasn't infact a British comedy, I guess I was too young at the time.

I remember seeing a few clips of Let the blood Run Free, and thinking it looked hilarious. Wasn't there a female doctor/surgeon/matron/nurse who had really long finger nails?

I remember watching a TV show that I used to love. I can't remember what it was called,

How is the love life?

It's on DVD here for 21 quid. (Bit steep if you ask me) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LET-BLOOD-RUN-FREE-SEASON-01-DVD-2-DISC-SET-New-/380235902825?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CDsDVDs_DVDs_DVDs_GL&hash=item5887d36f69

I do remember it but not sure if I recall the actual broadcast series, or just clips I've seen on the web in recent years. The long-fingernailed matron character rings several bells. I think she featured on an Aussie sketch show? I think the whole thing was like a cross between Bottom and Gimme Gimme Gimme. Lots of daftness, fart jokes, cartoon humour etc. Like an adult CBBC show.

quick update: The long-fingernailed nurse was called Matron Conniving Bitch. Clip here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHiu4FIYR0k

The humour totally reminds me of Time Gentlemen Please.

The two-disc set is going for about 15 quid at my local DVD shop. It's probably cheaper elsewhere. I was not a fan of the over-the-top 'acting' and blitheringly obvious 'jokes'. Then again, I also dislike Top Gear and game shows about cooking, which are now massively popular in Australia.
