There was a bloke on telly who donated his body to science, and his family weren't allowed to have his funeral for a whole year! While they were 'using' him.
Erk.

Quote: chipolata @ May 18 2010, 6:43 PM BSTI'm thinking of joining the Organ Donor Register. I've filled in the form but I'm getting cold feet about it now. I'm worried that sending it off might hasten my own death. It's the right thing to do, though. Somebody might need my small bowel and eyeballs one day.
I have done this as well.
However, I too got jumpy after agreeing to donate my organs just before my op, when they were filling in my form. I suddenly had a nasty thought that they might "let me go" in order to use my organs.

They probably do sometimes.
Quote: Aaron @ May 18 2010, 6:46 PM BSTDon't they do something really disturbingly disgusting like keeping you artificially 'alive' in order to remove the organs?
Probably, but death and dying is a disgusting business anyway. And you wouldn't grumble if you were waiting for my excellent pancreas!

And I imagine at that point you had bigger organs than the rest of us!
Eep, yes. I'm sure they did that on ER once. Didn't try all that hard to save a man who had an organ one of the other doctors needed.
Of course, ER isn't strictly real life. Apparently.

I can assure you that I would.

Don't be so stupid man!
My eyes weren't twice the size were they?
My heart as always was an efficent machine. The morning of the op I had blood pressure of 124 / 79 the nurses couldn't belive it.
To be fair the liver was likly to be a bit bigger, but that was about it.

I've touched one of your big nerves!

Quote: EllieJP @ March 10 2008, 10:29 PM BSTSo, who gives blood?
'Given? No.
Spilt? Yes.
Did I ever tell you about that time outside Benghazi? Dug in we were . . . . '
They don't keep you artificially "alive", but there's a small window between death and when organs can no longer be used in transplants, which is why it's so important that people join the register. It prevents quibbles about the person's wishes and doesn't delay operations. They take out the organs which they then keep artifically "alive" as far as I know.
It reminds me of that little thing called Frankenstein.
I'm studying that today for an essay that might come up tomorrow.

You can register your wish to have your organs donated here. http://www.organdonation.nhs.uk/ukt/how_to_become_a_donor/how_to_become_a_donor.jsp
It doesn't take long to fill out the forms.
