Russell Crowe seems to be best in movies where it's not about Russell Crowe being in it. 3:10 to Yuma wasn't advertised as a Crowe movie over here, as much as it was portrayed as a great western, which it was.
Russell Crowe as Robin Hood Page 4
I agree, he is better in movies that he's not in.
As this is descending into a thread on the merits of Russell Crowe, I should just mention that he was in LA Confidential and Master and Commander, both exceptional films.
I do quite like some of his movies.
I need to see Master & Commander.
He did look a bit old in the pic for Robin Hood that I saw though.
My oldest son saw the trailer online last night and said something about Robin Hood being as old as his grandpa. Had to laugh.

Older than Sean Connery in (the excellent) Robin and Marian. where Robin is supposed to be an old man.
(Though possibly still not as old as the rather portly Richard Greene in Sword of Sherwood Forest.)
Unengaging rubbish.
Crowe's accent is all over the place. Dire, cliché-ridden script. The attempts at humour are laughable .....
On the plus side. Great horses and an excellent King John.
It puzzles me why anyone would think we need yet another Robin Hood movie!!! The film industry is so bereft of original ideas it is almost upsetting.
Could it be a bit of Aussie pay-back for Mick Jagger having played Ned Kelly?
Quote: Alfred J Kipper @ May 12 2010, 7:55 PM BSTBut that's closer to English than Kevin Costner got. That was a really weird hybrid accent that one.
Crowe's Australian though. The English accent should be easier for him than a yank.

Yes, and Romper Stomper was great. As was The Insider. And of recent films, State of Play wasn't bad either.

LA Confidential is ace. That's two out of a long career though. He is in a lot of dull films that in no way perk my interest. Including this Robin Hood flick.
Quote: chipolata @ May 13 2010, 4:30 PM BSTAs was The Insider.
That was good, yeah.
Beautiful Mind was good.

Didn't like it.

So what actors do tickle your pickle? Consistently?

Thought it was fantastic.
