Russell Crowe as Robin Hood Page 3

I do love Alien and, especially, Bladrunner. I even sat through a documentary on it on the last DVD release of the film that was about six hours long. I understand Harrison Ford hates it though, which is a bit odd. Maybe hated making it, okay, but hates the film? Has he seen any of the many turds that litter his career?

Alien is great. I've yet to see the Directors Cut of Bladerunner, but it's on my shelf waiting, so I'll reserve judgement on that. I think Ford's problem probably stems from the fact he and Stott - sorry, Scott - didn't get on particularly well.

The thing about Ridley is he is an ex cameraman - he knows where to put the camera and what film should look like.

Okay, I'll accept Hammer as mainstream. It still confirms my theory of Hollywood blocking Englishmen to play him. Now who did the voices for the Disney cartoon? And wasn't the sheriff George Sanders? Vyola.

And where's the real Romans playing "Gladiator"?

Of course Jesus has been played by an Englishman (Robert Powell). And I think most people would agree that Jesus trumps Robin Hood.

Yeah, but Jesus doesn't have a bow and arrow now does he?

Jesus has fish and bread for everybody.

The Hollywood Reporter stole my line!

It's "Gladiator" in Sherwood Forest

Anyone remember the recent BBC version where Frair Tuck was a ripped black man? I'm still laughing at that one. Nevermind historical accuracy, let's fist the legend!

The ripped bit is not inconsistent with the legend, just with modern portrayals. The black man kind of is though, but then that was awful series.

Anyway this version. Apparently the script was the subject of a fierce bidding war, with bidders including Ridley Scott, who lost. The successful bidder then gave the script to Ridley Scott to direct. Ridley Scott then threw the original script out, saying it was complete poo, and commissioned another writer to rewrite it, near enough from scratch. Only In Hollywood.

I think I remember reading somewhere that Nottingham City council own the rights to Robin Hood doesn't it have to go through them too?

I could be completely and utterly wrong about the above by the way.

Saw this today.

My oh my, what a waste of time - and I like EVERYTHING.

Individual bits are grand, but someone find me some character in there.

Russell Crowe's been a bit shit since Gladiator. Becoming a massive movie star seemed to kill his career. Nice if this was a return to form.

I thought he was great in 3:10 to Yuma.

Ha! Mark Lawson's just suggested to Russell Crowe on Front Row that Robin Hood sounds Irish. Russell wasn't best pleased.

Uninterestingly enough, I'd never seen Bladerunner until recently and I watched the directors cut.
So it's just the way Stott, Scott would have wanted it.

Yeah very true he does, but he's become almost all cameraman and little else imo. Take another visual master, Kubrick, he knew how to make the strong visual scenes work with the flowing narrative. I've never been sure that Scott does, apart from the excellent Alien. To me his narratives always stutter and falter along, or like both Gladiator and the awful KoH, they just sink in the middle and become bloated, boring epics. There's something he's either missing or not doing right.

But that's closer to English than Kevin Costner got. That was a really weird hybrid accent that one.

I was quite excited when I heard Mr Crowe was cast. If my memory serves me right most Robin Hoods have been a bit weedy so I'm looking forward to seeing big, hunky Russell in the role, especially as there are no tights.
