General Election 2010 Page 125

It was so utterly bizarre that the party who came third, got to choose who became Prime Minister! Labour and Conservatives had to bring Nick presents and shiny apples so that he'd choose them.

Really odd.

A government made up of the party with the biggest share of the vote and the party with the lowest is ridiculous.

It is a little peculiar, yes.

Bah! Go on then, your terms.

See, I am Nick to your David.

:D

:D

I knew you'd make an implication on those lines. :D

Methinks it's more "I am David to your Nick."

He's quite some arm twister that Nick..
Deputy PM AND 5 Ministers !!
thats quite a dis-Proportional Representation within the Coalition Government.

And a referendum on Political Reform

Yes, I was just thinking exactly that; however, perhaps it was an offer made by the Conservatives? After all, if it all goes tits-up then there are more Lib Dems to shoulder some of the responsibility, rather than making either one of the groups disproportionately unpopular for decisions made.

Quote: Godot Taxis @ May 12 2010, 12:33 AM BST

That's quite accurate. New born babies are very greedy, selfish and dictatorial. They would all vote Tory if you could tear them away from the tit.

I've noticed that some younger people seem to choose conservative (which these days includes New Labour) as a sublimation of all that they have learned in the classroom, that being an unquestioning work ethic, an insistence on discipline and a belief in the mantra that results are everything.

Yet there are endless studies which demonstrate the shortcomings of this philosophy. However, these studies are invariably carried out by left-leaning bodies, which clearly should make us suspicious; except that there don't appear to be any right-leaning bodies carrying out such studies, presumably because conservative people don't actually care that much about social issues, because it is in their nature to put a higher premium on their own conservative beliefs.

So it would be nice if conservatives actually tried to prove their theories, but it seems that they'd have to first become liberal (small "l") to do this.

So you would have preferred the Tories to have gone into a coalition with Labour?

A coalition is about finding common ground, and therefore represetning the widest cross-section of teh electorate.

But you are right of course that in policy in terms that a Con/Lab coalition would have been a closer fit, but political tribalism rules that out, for the time being. It depends on how Labour responds to defeat. They might continue to fight for the centre ground, or they might reposition themselves as the party of the progressive left, in which case I might even vote for them.

So you would have preferred the Tories to have gone into a coalition with Labour?

It's a lose lose situation really either way...

So you would have preferred the Tories to have gone into a coalition with Labour?

No he would just much prefer if the Tories weren't in power at all.

No he would just much prefer if the Tories weren't in power at all.

They were going to be in power regardless. The big risk was they would call another election and get an outright majority. This way we get stable government and a brake on more distasteful Tory instincts, But to be honest I do not quite understand what Godot feels so strongly about - who did he think he was voting for when he voted Labour? Michael Foot? Labour have been Tory-lite for the past two decades.

I hope Samantha Cameron is pregnant and hasn't just let herself go.

Tories in power, good lord. Rather nice moment last night when I was out at a comedy night and everybody booed them.

Quote: EllieJP @ May 11 2010, 9:12 PM BST

Hardly. Been Tory since I was born.

It's like this is Star Wars and I've suddenly realised you've been a Sith Lord all along!

There's very posh, privileged young things where I live cheering "yah, yah the Tories" as if they're just watching the Boat Race. Voting Conservative is what mummy and daddy do, so they follow suit.

Their choice of politics has nothing to do with the welfare of others and the good of the Nation, only what it means to them - i.e preserving their privileged lifestyles.
