I see the Chelsea Pensioners hospital was founded so that's nice.

The IRA are essentially a militant wing of the Catholic church. Close enough to a suicide bomber.

No. It's not. Just because most of the IRA are undoubtedly Roman Catholics, doesn't mean it's a militant wing of the Church. Not least because the IRA want a unified Ireland, whereas most extremist miliatants want complete Islamic rule in the West. And everywhere else, for that matter.

Surely you're splitting hairs a bit there? People do violence in the name of Islam and people do violence in the name of Catholicism. Both parties are often persuing agendas which could be entirely secular if you ignore the religious umbrella which they tend to fall under.

Except the IRA didn't do violence in the name of religion, they did it in the name of Irish Unifiction. The fact they are all catholics is irrelevant. Islam is however integral to what groups like Al Queda are and stand for.
There was a high ranking member of the IRA who was a protestant at one time.

You don't think there would be a response to Western activities in Iraq and Afghanistan if they weren't operating under an Islamic banner? They are both groups working with similar short-term aims. Religion is more important to Al Qaeda but at the end of it all you're still looking at atrocities committed by two groups with religious ties.
I guess I basically agree with Alfred that there are some Catholics who are as extreme as some Muslims. Perhaps, with a different way of operating.

No. The IRA was the militant wing of Sinn Fein. It had nothing to do with the Catholic Church. The member base was predominantly Catholic, but this is unsurprising when you consider that Ireland is predominantly a Catholic country.
Fantastic thread title by the way, nogget!

Erskine Childers for one, and wasn't Roger Casement also? But then Eamon de Valera came along and turned the Free State into a deeply unpleasant theocracy.
Northern Ireland is divided on religious lines, that is what defines the communities, and is at the heart of the conflict. The Protestants are implacably opposed to the Church of Rome, and living next door to one of the most fundamentalist Roman Catholic states in Europe doubtless reinforced that. Hopefully as the Republic turns against Catholicism some of that tension will dissipate; if Ian Paisley could be unmasked as a paedophile that would probably help.

Yes, a few I would imagine. Wolf Tone was a protestant. You don't get much more republican than that.
Anyway, I think the Benidict Condom would sell bucket loads.
You could have a long list of Pope related products.
Skoda could name their new version of the roomster - the John Paul II
The Pius XII inch dildo
The Clement XVI school boy fancy dress outfit
And for the history lovers the Celestine V Nail Gun.
Niall gun, surely.

No, Sinn Fein was the faux-political wing of the IRA.

And for someone so uptight on aspects of grammar, you're quite lazy with proper nouns.

Aaron, don't let your views distort facts. Sinn Fein is one of the oldest political parties in Ireland and the second biggest today. If you go any further down this route you're going to look like a dick.

Oo -oo! I'm more lazy than you would ever believe with a lot more than proper nouns. I don't pass much comment on how people write their posts. People post on the hoof, quickly, with one one eye on the screen etc. Most mistakes are typos.
I don't take any pains to make my posts gramatically correct. I'm no expert on grammar incidentally, not even a self-professed one, just really petty.

Why do you think that that would concern me?
If Sinn Fein is older than the IRA, fair enough. How its size has any relevance to anything we're discussing whatsoever, is a mystery.
