Well my kids can watch anything else, but Who is the only thing short of a video nasty which I have to be careful of, because it can (and does) give them sleepless nights.

How old are they?

Quote: sootyj @ April 18 2010, 12:49 PM BST

but lay off the fat daleks they're ace

like Vanessa Feltz with a deathray

Laughing out loud

The Daleks are capable of creating a fully functioning AI in a passably human body. Yet when they regenerate they don't even think about giving their own lasers a 360-degree firing line.

Not only is Matt Smith terribly good-looking

Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyy.

Thank Christ for that. Not only is Matt Smith terribly good-looking, he is not grossly overplaying the emotions like Tennant did (though I have only seen the first episode of Series 5 so far).

You missed my point. For me he didn't convey the anger. I'm not talking about shouty scenery chewing, but controlled fury. It wasn't there for me.

Ah, I see. No fury from the deep. I should avoid commenting here (but I won't) because Australia is two weeks' behind in broadcasting the episodes.

I don't think this series has been radically different from the previous new ones.
But Moffat's episodes in the previous series did stand out as superior.

So, I'm a bit perplexed.
I am enjoying this series though, don't get me wrong. I suppose I was just expecting every episode to be as amazing as Blink. (unrealistic, obviously!)

It's funny, the issues and problems with old Who (why it died in the ratings and was dropped by the BBC) were ironed out by hardcore fans in the fifteen years the show was off the air.

There is a brilliant essay by Gary Gillat in the Doctor Who - from A-Z book. This should be required reading for anyone writing for the new show or being involved in it in any way. Historic stories featuring well known characters that the Doctor 'knows' have tended to be problematic, as has relying on the show's convoluted continuity, past monsters and the sonic screwdriver. The screwdriver for example was virtually absent throughout Tom baker's first few years and the show was richer for it.

The low point with historical stories was reached under Peter Davidson where he became responsible for starting the great fire of London and causing the explosion that wiped out the dinosaurs.

I avoided a recent Tennant story that featured William Shakespeare, but I see that we will be treated to Vincent Van Gogh in this series - with the Doctor no doubt somehow being responsible for some breakthrough in his artistic development or him cutting his ear off. :(

I was all excited when the sonic screwdriver was busted in Smith's first episode and thought it was being retired. Alas not.

Oh, I thougt he did all that very well.

Have you not seen Dalek? That mid section with the guns can rotate.

I don't get the dislike for that really; I think he only used it properly once last night? To open the robots chest??

I think in last weeks episode it was there. His anger at the humans for what they did to the whale

Quote: hotzappa11 @ April 18 2010, 12:24 PM BST

After reading various forums I don't udnerstand all the dislike for it.

Me neither, it wasn't a top drawer episode, but it really was a whole bunch better than most of the Dalek stroies we've had since the shows return.

Quote: ShoePie @ April 18 2010, 10:33 AM BST

The Jammy Dodger that was clearly a Jammy Dodger from the second he held it up.

Why would these newly minted Daleks have any idea about biscuits, let alone different types?? :D I thought it was funny, and quite a nice little nod, for fans, to Tom Baker and his deadly jelly baby moment.

But that's what Dr Who is forrrr. It's fun being scared by it when you're a kid. They'll look back on it when they're grown ups with affection.
I was genuinely scared by it when I was small - the daleks and the noise the TARDIS made. I would be well annoyed if I'd missed out on that because my parents hadn't let me watch it.

Yeah, it's like these parents who worry about dirt around kids; let 'em roll around in the mud and stuff grass in their mouths!
