FHM Stand-Up Hero Page 2

I expect that they were introduced as new acts, at special Jongleurs nights not normal ones.

I think the contest is coming back... although obviously following the Jongleurs financial problems news that has surfaced since this this last contest, FHM are going to need to find a new backer.

(For anyone that missed the TV programme, it's repeated this Saturday at 10pm)

Jongleurs weren't the backers, they just provided the venues, and they still exist although they've now split into two companies, Jongleurs and Highlight, so one, or maybe both of them can provide the venues if they decide to run this again this year.

I was under the impression Jongleurs (well, the old version of it) actually sponsored the event so part-paid for the show, in return for getting their brand name on the posters, on the telly etc.

Either way, lets hope that someone can support this contest this year too as it seems to have given a genuine leg up to a couple of the finalists.

Personally I think the competition was a bit flawed. We weren't introduced as new acts, just thrust up on the stage in front of a paying audience.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but sounds like AngieBaby actually took part?!? If what you say is correct Angie, I guess that must have been tough but I suppose on the flip-side if they did announce you as 'new acts' that might have worked against you anyway? Either way, based on the TV show: tough crowd.

Hi Mark,

there were a couple of us from the BCG that took part, but from my own experience, I'd have preferred if they'd told the audience.

If I imagine myself as an audience member on the night, I think I would have been more receptive to someone introduced as a 'New Act, brought to you by Jongleurs, encouraging fresh new talent.'
I'd be quite happy to have paid for 5 acts, and got 2 new acts for free, and enjoyed seeing some new up and coming acts. Everyone wants to say they saw 'So-and So' before they were famous!

Others may disagree with me and say New Acts are ripped to shreds, but I'd have preferred that than the lukewarm reception I got. Also I got the feeling that some of the established acts felt I hadn't paid my dues.

If a different spin had been put on it, it could be great TV, and it's a booming industry, so I think a series would be very viewer-friendly.

Interesting show. Looked like the guy who won was a worthy winner. Funny how many of the audiences were tough (especially Reading) and as a punter I agree with Angie, if you know someone's a new act then nine times out of ten you will be more patient with them if they are dying out there. I don't see why anyone would want to present new acts as though they weren't.

It's repeated again tomorrow night (Sunday) if anyone missed it.

Blimey, really? That's really quite odd. Although perhaps the idea was exactly on that basis: by not stating that you were new, you got a harsher ride than otherwise may have been the case, and so they got through a larger number of acts, more definitively, more quickly?

So, does anyone know if this will be happening again next year? I'm thinking of taking a plunge into the deep end and entering it. I've never done stand up in my life, but I think I've got some really funny stuff to say, most of which is from my sitcom script. Is anyone else thinking of entering?

A quick word of advice, a 5 minute spot at a Jongleurs on a saturday night is not the place to give stand up a go for the first time, if you really want to give it a try find out where your local open spot nights are and see if you can get a few gigs under your belt.

Most of the people doing the FHM hero thing have been gigging for a minimum of a year, some a lot longer and even relatively experienced acts struggled on some of the nights.

I see there is a new comp this year and they've changed the rules, so no Jongleurs slot. Anyone entering?

I'm considering it. Shame it's not come in 6 months time when I've got a few gigs under my belt !

I'm applying, just getting some video together now.
