Yeh that whole period in the 50s when we still thought we were a big player

It was launched in the 70s.

I just learned something new from Wikipedia: the United Kingdom is the only country to have successfully developed and then abandoned a satellite launch capability.

When was it abandoned?

1971. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Arrow

I watched a few minutes of a documentary about Black Arrow on YouTube. Interesting stuff.

Yes, because it was only after they developed a system to launch satellites that someone bothered to ask: "How much do satellites cost, anyway?"

Apparently the Concorde project was so damned expensive that a lot of other hugely important things got left behind. Maybe our obsolete supersonic status symbol was a huge mistake.

I won't pretend to understand it, but a little interesting nonetheless.

Billwill has been to "Forbidden Planet" and bought 5 SF books which fearure Dragons.

Including the latest Todd McCaffrey: "DragonHeart".

I hate the ones who make up some elaborate story, pretending not to be a beggar.

Really annoying, because you can't tell the people in REAL trouble from these scammers.

The sensible solution is to only ever donate to real charities.

Speaking of rockets, this is a cool video of a Russian launch going terribly wrong. The observers on the ground got quite a fright.

The milk bottle must have been crooked !

Flipping heck!!
That's amazing. And kind of funny the way they reacted.

Although presumably there were people in the rocket? Or was it unmanned?

No, it was a satellite launch. The people in the video were scientists watching their "baby" head off to space.

Oops, edited it before I read your reply!

Aw, bless 'em.

You've got me rocket-crash searching now.

This one's bad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_EnrVf9u8s
