The "shithole" comment was only a reference to the film - it really is pretty although I'd have been pissed off like Ray in the film if I had to stay there for two weeks...One day is enough to visit the place.

I think that the larger-than-life plot was intentional - we are told numerous times throughout the film that being in Bruges is like "being in a fairy tale".

More likely, we're told numerous times that being in Bruges is like "being in a fairy tale" to somehow explain away the larger-than-life plot.
