Grand National 2010

Just looking through the National runners and riders and noticed an amusing priests and boys connection. Surely someone should've kept them apart...in both senses of the word. ;)

In fact there are a few other dodgy references in the runners list: The Package, Big Fella Thanks, Comply or Die, Character Building, Don't Push it, My Will, Ballyfitz and Backstage (as opposed to back passage)

Might help if it was Priest instead of Preist which doesn't appear to mean anything.

Oh, I missed that - I even spelt it correctly in my post.

[sidesteps off stage left embarrassed] :$

20 squid each way on Black whatsisname me :)

Well done. One of mine didn't make it, the other wasn't placed.

How many of the poor sods died this year?

me pretty much made my money back on an each way bet on state of play.

I normally do a lot better :(

£5 on Black Alpacino(?) on a each way. Won £12.50 including bet money. The bugger didn't have the legs for the final stretch.

You should have got more money than that back on a fiver each way bet surely, what odds did you get?

I think Bert means his total stake was £5, therefore his Each Way bet was actually £2.50. Hence...

Price: 16/1 (placed = 1/4 odds)

Unit Stake: £2.50

Total Stake: £5

So, £2.50 x 4 = 10 (plus unit stake)

Return = £12.50

Fair enough, thanks Don :)

I'm more concerned about that too.

No horses died in the National this year but three died on the second day of the meeting. There's a rather disturbing total from all horse racing displayed on the following website: http://www.horsedeathwatch.com/

I managed to encourage my friends to all put 20p in on a horse and the person who's horse came closest to the front won a whole £1.60.

I went with The Package (which apparently was typical choice for me) but I don't even know if it finished.

I don't like the way they say "destroyed" like a car. It should be "put to sleep" THEN made into glue.

I never understood the glue part. It's a bit like the bit in the Bill Bryson book where he says "You could stand me on a beach for a million years and it would never occur to me that you could turn sand into glass."

Bert: "So what are we going to do with this dead horse?"
Pete: "I know, let's turn it into glue."
