Doctor Who... Page 397

Not when it is ersatz emotion, as was the case too often with Tennant. The way he switched from phony manic glee to over-the-top sentimentality was a bit like observing how Alan Alda in (later episodes of) MASH would invariably switch from wisecracking Groucho Marx mode to sombre Gregory Peck mode.

I blame the Alda thing on them letting him direct episodes...

I thought he came across quite well on Jonathon Ross, and the clips looked very promising indeed.

Ooh good call.

Alas, I'm always devoid of original thought. There was a Futurama episode that spoofed MASH, with their version of Hawkeye being a robot doctor with a switch that changed him from wisecracking to deadly serious. Did Futurama ever spoof or reference Doctor Who?

Another good call.

The Simpsons spoofed Dr Who a lot/

Channel 301 (on Freeview) has the first minute (well, 30 seconds) of The Eleventh Hour, the first episode of the new series.

Ooooh
11th Hour, 11th Doctor... I Geddit.

Or here if it's easier.

I found myself wondering if they chose him because he acts a bit like Tennant.

I'm a bit wary of all the BBC hype about him, with the unsubtle implications that he's like soooo amazing. Are they hoping that if they say it enough, it becomes true? Time will tell.

Heard the new guy on radio1 this morning seems really down to earth, nice enough bloke, I could easily have a pint with him.

Doesn't mean shit if he can't act like an interesting time travelling doctor though.

The clips I've seen (only a couple) make me think he'll be mostly okay, but a touch too much like he's trying to be quirky.

But like I said, I've only seen a couple of clips so he could be anything.

I wasn't too happy when Jonathan mentioned the John Smith episodes and Matt's face went blank. He obviously isn't exactly into Dr Who. That was one great thing about Tennant - he was genuinely a massive Dr Who geek. But, meh. What can you do.

I wasn't too happy when Jonathan mentioned the episodes where David Tennat gurned like he had a hamster up his arse or rambled on about shops and Matt threw up. He obviously isn't exactly into annoying over acting. That was one great thing about Tennant - he was genuinely a massive twat. But, meh. What can you do.

Zoo that's so rude.

I've never seen Matt Smith in anything. At least Tennant and Ecclestone had previous stuff you could watch. But this guy's an unknown quantity. I wasn't hugely keen on his capering about in the Tardis at the end of the last series, but we'll have to see.

I've seen him in a couple of things, Moses Jones and an episode of The Street. Clearly a good actor but nothing to suggest what he will do with the role, as there was with David Tennant in RTD's Casanova.

I take it no one has heard anything yet about the radio comp?
