Maybe he is, yes.
The Gemma Factor Page 4
He could be off an advert yes. He does remind me a tiny bit of Alan Cumming crossed with someone else.
Quote: David Carmon @ March 17 2010, 11:29 AM GMTThe gay one looks familiar, maybe he's been in the bar I used to work in Manchester pissed off his face and high on drugs like most of the ones that act as camp as that because they're so desperately unhappy with their lives.
His stupid twisted expression and pathetic teeth and OTT tan made me want to punch his queer (also being a 'queer' I'm reclaiming it in a post modern way) little arse across the moon!
I've no idea what it actually means though, but Meera Syal said it was fine on Beautiful People. I'll believe anything Auntie Hayley says.
Frankly I am disgusted at the vile way you are discussing what is essentially someone's career.
I know the actor who plays Jeff having trained with him at drama school. I think it is important to remember that actors can only do what is asked of them by a) the script, and b) what the director wants. Ross is straight, and plays the character exactly as the writer had envisaged, and how the director wanted it.
He has worked hard to get a lead series regular in a series and does a lot of work for charity, having cared for his Grandmother when she was ill with cancer prior to filming. And I know for a fact he is very anti-drugs.
I'm all for free speech, but this to me seems un-necessarily cruel. You should be ashamed to write such hateful, vicious, and unsubstantiated rubbish.
Have you looked in the mirror yourself? I know who I'd rather wake up next to!!!!

You do not think there is anything offensive in a straight man portraying a gay character in such a stereotypically negative way? Doubtless David (who is gay) assumed that the actor was playing himself, because the alternative was even more distasteful. It is rather like having a white actor blacked up and delivering lines in the style of Jim Davidson's 'Chalky'.
Fair enough, if that is what the writer and director wanted, he is just doing his job. But sometimes doing your job is going to get you abuse, and sometimes it is going to be deserved.

To Timbo - there are two issues here, which you seem unable to separate.
Firstly, your criticism of the part Ross Adams plays, which you seem to hyper-sensitively object to, has no bearing on his personal life. As his friend quite rightly states, he is doing his job like every other person working and paying his tax.
Your comments, however, have overspilled into his personal life. He stands accused of drug and alcohol abuse. What gives you the right to stereotype him in this way, and then take exception to his character stereotyping gay people? I suggest you grow up, keep your offensive personal slurs to yourself and work on ridding yourself of the chip on your shoulder.
If you don't like the show, grab your remote control and try ITV. Have a nice day.
And I suggest you only register one account when getting on your high horse.
I haven't been able to watch this show but I'd just like to point out to the poster who is the actor's friend that you seems to have mixed up Timbo's and David's comments.

Me too.
Aaron was referring to the character's face. Which is smothered in brown makep and eyeliner, and supposed to be ridiculous looking.
Veronica,
This followed on from a comment that I made, to the effect, that it was either a hateful portrayal or a hateful person playing himself. David - not me - seemed to assume the latter, and that the actor was a particular type of gay man with whom he is familiar.
You have cleared this up.
If your friend was attempting to portray a character who needed a good slap, he did a good job, but as this is a sitcom I would suggest that was not the intention - characters should be flawed, but ultimately sympathetic. To what extent the fault for this misjudgement lies with the actor, the writer or the director, only they can know.
But I am uncomfortable with a straight man playing up to the most grating of gay stereotypes. James Dreyfus playing a camp man I have no particular problem with, there is truth and warmth in the performance, but as Chris Rock commented, just because he makes jokes about niggers, that does not make it okay for a whitey to do the same.
I wish your friend well with his career; I am sure he is excited at having landed this part, and no matter what the public and critical response, I am sure that ultimately it will only be good for his career.
I did follow your advice and pick up the remote, but I doubt that I am the intended target audience.

Kenneth Williams? No that's too nice a description.
Hmmmmm, maybe Mr Hanky the Christmas Poo from South Park, both are very skinny.

This is meant to be satire isn't it?
I don't care how much charity work he does, or who he cares for, I couldn't give a f**k if he's straight or not. The way he acts makes me want to slap him several times across the face.
I buy charity records and cared for my cat when she was ill with a tumour, does that make it bad for someone to dislike me? No.
And if that's the best he can do for a career then God help him, he'll need it. The show's scripts will do him no favours, but his acting's apalling.

And you could have thought of a better user name. Plus it was more a criticism of the actual character who is obviously gay.
Before commenting I would get to know the humour of the forums and actually read things properly, unless you're actually a chav in a trackie eating a kebab whilst hanging up the phone to one of the mothers of 13 children who want a cut of some of your benefits.
Aw, he's following us on Twitter.
He looks much nicer on his photo.
