Just got confirmation that my pistol purchase has shipped and will arrive Friday. Nice to see that UPS has marked it as "adult signature required." (It's shipping to a gun shop, not my house.)

It seems that people will always want to get something for nothing. This is basically all about people taking things they can't or won't pay for.

I don't think it can be compared to taping songs off the radio back in the day. The quality of those recording where awful and who wants to hear Agadoo with The Hairy Cornflake talking over it? So you went and bought the record or cassette anyway. Well at least I did.

I wonder if people would feel differently if they were creating the stuff that people are taking without paying for?

I'm off to Guatemala. Anyone want owt?

I may not be a fan of Gustava Mala, but there's no need to eviserate him with an upper class accent.

Chip's shoes are squeaking today. "I can hear you moving!" people keep saying.

Nope.

Plus it's not the protecting of the music that is a major issue it's the methods they are using. I suppose it was inevitable we'd all be monitored eventually.

Gav - surely you'd want to be paid for all the work you put into your animations one day?

I don't agree with the methods of prosecution that's being threatened, no. But ultimately are we complaining about that or the fact we want to take material from the Net and not pay for it? We can't say we're justified in doing it because Bono is very wealthy.

I could get revenue from allowing advertisers to display shit on the animations etc I see your point, I just do not agree with Big Brother watching more than it already is.

Mp3's aren't great you loose alot of top end sound from them, it's to do with them being digitised or atleast that used to be the case. Still the best medium for music is Vinyl.

I never got rid of my record player deck. I like the crackles on old vinyl too.

If it pays ;)

Dolly, you're ignoring the statistics, and just like the record industry you're considering that every single download is equated to a lost sale. Which is simply not the case.

A quick reminder:
Pirates spend on average 40% more on music and music merchandise than people who ONLY buy legally.
Increasingly, our most successful acts build up their followings through illegal downloading before taking those fans with them into the mainstream and selling them tickets, albums, singles. Kate Nash, Lily Allen, Arctic Monkeys just to name a few off the top of my head. Read Elliot's post above. He's typical, not an exception to the rule.
It's a storefront. A shop window. If someone finds an artist but doesn't buy their song/album, it at least means that they're aware of their existence and are more likely to be 'into' them in future. As far as that side of pirating goes, the BBC have a lot to answer for in cancelling Top Of The Pops.

I know that when I was a music pirate, back in the day, I still bought stuff that I would have bought had downloading not been available to me. I just also acquired music that I would never have bought, and never have heard. The industry did not lose a single sale, but a lot of artists existence became known to me. Whether I later bought anything or not, how is that bad for the record industry?

Statistics can mean many things. I don't see why people have to download or take stuff without paying for it. It can be an equally slippery slope.

Because it's too expensive, certainly so to buy 'sight unseen'. Because they're not interested enough in it to shell out their cash on, expensive or not.
Etc.

Not sure what it's a slippery slope to? Terrorism? Communism? Genocide?

I just got a shipment of CDs! :D!

I share a shelf for CDs with my Dad and I'll have to clear out more of his stuff to fit mine onto it. (It's my goal to match the number of CDs he has in there by the time I leave home. Pleased)

But then you just go without. That's life. I've managed to discover music old and new by buying CDs, going to gigs, listening to the radio, being lent CDs, asking your local library to get hold of a copy - and the same with films and TV shows and I'm not particularly wealthy and certainly wasn't as a teenager and in my early 20s. I've never downloaded anythign illegally. But with the Internet it's just easy to not pay for stuff, so that's what people want to do.
