RealDeal Theatre's next Sitcom Saturday will be held on June 12, 2010 at Westminster Reference Library, 35 St. Martin's Street, London WC2H 7HP, England.
RealDeal Theatre is looking for six fifteen-minute sitcoms for Sitcom Saturday, a professionally-directed and acted script-in-hand rehearsed reading, open to the public, at Westminster Reference Library off Leicester Square, London.
We allocate a director for each of the selected scripts and the directors then liaise with the writer(s) before a casting session, rehearsal and the performance on Saturday, June 12 2010.
The window for submissions will be during the month of March 2010. Entries should be emailed to scripts@realdealtheatre.org.uk between Monday, March 1 and Wednesday, March 31 2010 only. No entries will be accepted outside these dates. Keep up with RealDeal Theatre news by joining one of our social networking web pages listed below.
Entries are welcome from anywhere as long as the writers can liaise with the directors beforehand. Writers must also attend the June public rehearsed reading in London.

I'm genuinely tempted, but how much competition is there for the slots?

Seriously, we are of course a competition because anything which requires selection is a competition. We do try and give a couple of sentences of feedback to everyone who doesn't get through.
The difference between us and the other sitcom competitions is that we are not a competition on the night. We are a writer-led script development event where writers get a chance to sit in on casting and rehearsal and, for those who have not been through the theatrical process, it's a good introduction and for those who have it's still a good way of gaining more experience.
It's also a community event and we have a good cross section audience who enjoy having an insight into sitcom development. Our sitcoms range from the very polished to those which are very promising early drafts. We like to have a range of different types of sitcoms and both audiences and participants have told us they find them not only funny but interesting to see the variety of new sitcom writing.
Previously we've had very short submission windows (two weeks) and have received an average of just over sixty scripts. This time we're having a longer submission window than ever before - a month.

Hello there!
I have just written a 30 min sitcom script and would like to edit it to 15 minutes for submission.
However, I was just wondering whether you accept email submissions in Final Draft format? Bearing in mind that my older version of the software doesn't have a PDF option...
If not I could re do it in word, or send it by post(it looks all shiny and new in its final draft print out version!)

Just wondering -- how risky can these scripts be, with regard to swearing, sex references, blasphemy (in its true religious sense), etc?
I understand that the successful entries will be performed in front of a live audience -- will there be children in attendance, or is it a post-watershed show (so to speak)?

Hi David,
As long as we can open the emailed file, you're welcome to send it in any format. We don't have Final Draft software so if it can't be opened except with Final Draft software, send it in word or rtf.

Hi,
Chosen scripts are given to directors who then work with the writers, so if we think a script is good we take it, regardless of this and this can be looked at before performance. It's the standard of the script that matters to us and if a script is a viable sitcom, whether it's pre or post watershed, it's not likely to be out and out offensive. We don't reject scripts specifically for swearing, sex references, blasphemy etc but because we don't think they're well-written and funny enough.
