Safeties aren't designed to keep children from firing guns, they're intended to keep a firearm from discharging accidentally when they're dropped or bumped.
Many new pistols don't have a traditional safety catch. Nowadays they tend to have mechanisms that ensure that the gun is being gripped by a hand and a finger is on the trigger. Your typical revolver has no safety at all. Don't pull the hammer back unless you plan on shooting something.
