Having a Mother, Step Mother, Mother in Law and a daughter to buy for her Mother and Step Mother it's one expensive day!
I was sensible and delegated the task this year.

Darn didn't think of that. Maybe next year, well since I forgot fathers Bday again this year thought it best to give the job to the caring sibling and just sign my name.
Quote: EllieJP @ March 12 2010, 8:58 AM GMTI have my Mum's birthday and Mother's Day this weekend, so thought I'd make the effort and go up to see her.
I have Mother's Day, my mum's birthday and Elliot's birthday on the same day!
Robyn has to go buy her mum's present in a moment, actually.

Ha, I do that for my brother every time now without even having to check. He ALWAYS forgets.

That quote came from the Brady Campaign, which is the most virulent anti-gun organization in the country, so I wouldn't take their word as gospel. That said, there are a few points worth mentioning:
1) I'm sure that alleged 21x figure includes suicides. Americans choose firearms (60% of the time) to end their lives while people in the UK jump in front of trains and make your morning commute even worse. The number of firearm suicides in the U.S. is greater than the total number of murders in this country.
2) By virtue of the fact that our citizens can freely own firearms, our homes and well-being are already protected. Our overall rate of burglary and assault are lower than in the UK because people know that they are liable to be shot if they kick down a door or mug someone in the street. Burglaries of occupied dwellings and random acts of street violence are very unusual here.
3) Most importantly, the man was an idiot for leaving a gun within reach of a child. As far as I'm concerned, idiots shouldn't be allowed to possess firearms.

In a country where it's legal to own them though, it's kind of tricky to filter out potential idiots. You can't just ask them, they might lie!

I just woke up. Nothing like counteracting a little incorrect data with some facts to get the blood pumping at 7 a.m.

The background checks for handgun purchase are rather thorough, but they don't include a common sense proviso. Most parents are smart enough to use trigger locks on their firearms, even in states where it isn't required by law. I chose not to own any guns while my children were living in my home. Now that they're old enough to purchase handguns of their own I've just bought my first firearm. It'll be here a week from today and I can't wait to take it out on the range and run a few hundred rounds through it.
They send them through the mail?? Is that where the expression going postal comes from?
