How long to wait

Ok, so around 6 months ago I sent a script to various production companies and I havent heard a peep since! Is this normal? Will they send me an email back to tell me they're not interested or not? And do you think I should email then to ask for some feedback or if a decision has been made? I'm a newbie and it was my first time writting so unsure what to expect!

Some will email or even post a letter to tell you if they're interested or not. Others may say nothing at all.

If you're after feedback, then perhaps put the opening scenes up in the critique section on here.

Prodcos get vast numbers of scripts which they then have to pay some one to read. So often they don't get read at all.

Many now have a policy of not accepting full script submissions.

More often when you're sending off they're looking for past credits, samples of stuff you filmed and who you can bring with you.

It maybe easier to go for open talent and competitions and hope to get noticed.

How long is a piece of string? The piece I have in my hand is eighteen inches in length. I hope this answers your question.

Six months is terrible. But with less and less Prodco's taking unsolicited material it could be a sign of the times. Who did you send to Hyde?

Sorry for the late reply! I'm almost as bad as the production companies!

I had a look around loads of places but none seemed to be accepting non-solicited scripts. I'm going to send to BBC Writersroom now; but I only sent to:
Channel K
Channel X
Avalon

I may well put up a scene or two for feedback on this site. Don't be too harsh though!

I thought Channel X was a porn channel.

Well its a risky comedy! Na, just kidding. Channel X is a porno-channel I believe; but also the name of a production company. Just had a look what they've done; Modern Toss & Jason Manford Live.

Unfortunately prod co's can take ages to get back to you, if they even do at all. The last work I sent out went to six company's. Of those two never replied at all, despite my gentle reminders. One took nearly ten months to reply. One was about three months the last two taking about six months.

It can be an awful period of time if you sit waiting for an answer so, like most will tell you here, move on to your next project and concentrate on that one until you hear something down the line.

Def.

Deferenz has it right; forget about this one, get moving with your next project and think about ways of getting prod cos interested in you in ways other than just writing. Shoot a sketch. Try some stand up. Get something animated. Just make sure it's top-notch stuff.

Oh, and Hyde, you want your feedback to be as harsh as possible. You'll find no shortage of friends and well-wishers but genuine critics who offer constructive criticism are your real friends when it comes to writing.

So, has anyone on here tried sending their script to a famous actor,in the hope that his/her influence might make things happen?

Yes. And Daniel Craig still hasn't asked me for a date. :(
