I haven't watched The Wire either, but you only need a vague awareness of the show to find that bit funny, I think. It's not really a piece of reference humour.

Well, I'm sure there are looooads of people who have no idea about The Wire at all. Though as this was on BBC Two, perhaps a lot of the audience would have had some awareness of it.

Neither of you have watched The Wire?! Yet you find time to watch *this*!?

:D

:(

I've heard so many people say exactly what he did about The Wire. Made me chuckle.

Saw it when it first started, but didn't enjoy it. Hence I stopped watching it. That's normally how it works for me.

It was so poor, I reckon I can mention the awful canned laughter without being lectured.

I was part of the audience for episode 2 "The Handsomeness" recorded at Teddington Studios last June and I assure you that the 300-strong audience was no laughter track.

Having said that I certainly didn't laugh out loud at everything and thought the episode was uneven - although there were some genuinely very funny moments, such as Clive's "That's Australia!" speech.

Interestingly, when it was recorded, the show was still called "The Scum Also Rises" and the name change to "The Persuaders" seems to have been a relatively late decision.

Laughing out loud He's a good sport. I <3 Count Buckules.

Another enjoyable episode, I thought. No, it's not reaching the heights of the very best of these sort of sitcoms, like The IT Crowd, but it's had two pretty good episodes in a row now. Hopefully it can stay at this level, or improve.

I'd say Keaton and the boss Clive are the standout characters . That hairdo of Simon Farnaby's is like Don King meets Kramer :D

That episode was Aaron approved.

Jarred Christmas doesn't mind taking the piss out of Australians, because he's actually from New Zealand.

Almost Fun Sitcom Trivia:

Q: What connects last night's episode of The Persuasionists with Matthew Horne?

A: Last year Matthew Horne played the title role in a production of Entertaining My Sloane. Dudley Sutton (of Lovejoy fame), appearing as the leader of the Angry Old People last night, played Sloane in the original production of Joe Orton's play.

(Back to the world of self-loathing.)

There were a few familiar jokes that I remember from other sitcoms last night. The 'Those trousers are definitely bi-curious', or what ever it was, was a bit used on 30 Rock. Not saying the writer copied any jokes, just that I'm a geek. When the boss changed his pen for a slightly larger one to take the good news, also reminded me of when Moss changed his glasses for a slightly larger pair on The IT Crowd.
