Fair comparison. I think that what some of the DJs do with the remixes are a little more sophisticated, but still a little gimmicky.

But wow! I can't remember the last time I have listened to the Chipmunks. When we were little we would slow the record player down as slow as it would go and it make it sound like a normal person singing.

I have a feeling, though, that electronic augmentation will be the next electric guitar.

Weird Al awaits the equilibrium (let's hope it's extinction) of Auto Tune: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYzv-AVi78E

Having just listened to Hey Jude auto-tuned, I'll be happy to never hear it again. Almost makes me long for the vocals of The Smurfs.

I don't wish to be pedantic... actually I do... but surely what these artists are using is a Vocoder http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vocoder a piece of hardware/software used to digitally alter the voice, whereas Auto-Tune http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auto-Tune is a neat little piece of software used to disguise the fact that the artist may look good but can't actually sing.

Not that any of the latest chart toppers would ever use Auto-Tune or even allow it to be used on thier albums etc.

Improper use of Auto-Tune results in the aforementioned sounds. They're doing it intentionally now. I've fooled around with it myself and I can assure you that it makes those horrible sounds.
