Auto Tunes

I am amazed at the way people are using auto tune now a days. I know in the hip hop world auto tunes has come to symbolize lazy MCs. But artists are revolutionizing the humble talk box.

I am a huge fan of Roger Troutman who was one of the first to mainstream the talk box:

T-Pain is known for using auto tune exclusively. Here is the internet meme that no one could avoid whenever posted pictures of their boating excursions on Facebook:

Lately the hottest use of auto tunes is taking everyday audio (or video) and mixing it with auto tunes, my favourite is DJ Steve Porter. Here is my favourite:

Auto tune the news, simply mind boggling:

What are your favourites?

For the musically retarded like me, "auto tune" is the software that changes pitch, such as in Cher's song Believe.

I saw a couple of good ones - probably on b3ta.com - where someone had done some classic comedy sketches with auto tune.

I hate every single song I've heard that uses that shitty software gimmick.

I used to listen to a lot of Roger Troutman, back when I used to Pop (or "Body-Pop" as we call it over here). Did you know he was killed by his own brother?

I hate a lot of the modern stuff that uses Auto Tune, e.g. that weak Black Eyed Peas song.

Autos ok, I love "I'm on a boat" Laughing out loud

I knew he died under odd circumstances, but I wasn't sure what exactly. I guess I just assumed it was drugs.

I also loathe BEP, which is a problem because my wife loves them.

I think that auto tune has saturated mainstream hip hop, but there is a place for it. Especially with the evolution of music in a YouTube age. Steve Porter is a genius if you ask me. His tracks juxtapose audio and video and create a sort of ironic music video. He has been hired to create videos as viral advertisements, the 'Community' clip earlier is one.

I can't stop watching this one, Henry Rollins versus The Tecnhno Viking:

Given the choice between the two . . . .

The wife nearly strangled me in an apoplectic rage when I pointed out that Micheal Buble's vocals on "Still Haven't Met You Yet" are autotuned. I couldn't believe the venom in her voice when she said "Of course it's not bloody autotuned, he's just a great singer."

She's right of course, he is a great singer. But the vocals on that track are autotuned, trust me. Anyone disagree? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AJmKkU5POA

Sounds like it to my untrained ear. And I assume that it's always intentional if you can detect it; it was originally intended to make small, unnoticeable tweaks.

In the Buble case I don't think you're meant to detect it, so your ear is pretty good Mr Dabutt.

Tough board.

It is not Vivaldi, sure, but then again if you were alive during the eighteenth century you would probably be yelling at Vivaldi to get off your lawn and pull up his trousers ;)

How about some Carl Sagan auto tuned

I am not a huge fan of hip hop, but I tend to listen to underground MCs. I like Madvillian, quasimoto, MF DOOM, the Visionaries.

I have been playing Royce Da 5'9" 'Street Hop' a lot. The best track is 'Gun Harmonizing'. this is another great track:
