My NJ Sketch - read it, it's topical! Page 4

I'm also contemplating what it says that this sketch has attracted perhaps more anger and posts than Sooty's Haiti sketch.

Possibly it says that most of us know sootyj well enough to know that he was not actively attempting to provoke, and that he did not attempt to defend himself with specious arguments.

Agreed. I should have added the phrase, "In general..." :)

That's all right then. ;)

It's not my Haiti sketch it's everybodies Haiti sketch because we are all one human race.

And it's my rudeness about Jordan's progeny that caused all the real offence.

Great Renegade has beaten me to being BCG's biggest none Troll bellend.

Can Sootyj win at nothing?

Griff you're meaner to me then Lucy ever was to Charlie Brown.

Oi, you won my affection. :P :) Yes, it's the booby prize, admittedly.

Did someone say booby?

Mmmmm. Booby.

Renegade - the main point about shows like Newsjack is not to produce topical comedy but to bring on new writers and performers. Writers such as Andy Hamilton & Guy Jenkin (Outnumbered), Ade Edmondson (Bottom), Rob Newman & Dave Baddiel (Mary Whitehouse), Pete Sinclair (Lead Balloon), Mark Burton (Madagascar, Curse of the Were-Rabbit), dozens more - all began their careers writing topical gags for the 80s and 90s equivalents of Newsjack. Yes they spent a lot of time writing topical comedy, more importantly they learned writing under pressure, to a deadline.

Griff - there have always been writers and performers who have sneered at the topical radio show. Ricky Gervais springs to mind, the guys who wrote 'Star Stories' I seem to remember. Doesn't some of the best comedy spring from irrational anger at pointless targets?

Dave - stop being such a woolly liberal and get off the fence for once.

Well, ideally it should do both...

I'm nuts about caramel...only hazelnuts mind, from Hull

That's my topic Hull joke.

When you're famous Aaron can use that quote to reccomend it.

"Hit comedy writer BCG is almost as good as death!"

Good grief what a load of balls. I've just wasted a few minutes actually reading back, and pretty much nothing happens until Carpark reacts (over-reacts, I think) and claims everyone is having a go at his sketch unfairly. In turn, that kicks other stuff off. In that sense - whatever the merits of RCP's complaints - it's just like any other critique thread where some precious writer can't handle what's returned to them.

My opinion remains that it comes across as snide and it's too long, but that's critique. Put it up and expect to get crit. Don't expect everyone to think you have made a great satirical point. If you really want to make a satirical point, your strongest angle is the bit about the female actors, and you would have a more recognisable and stronger target if you poked the higher echelons of broadcast comedy rather than the bottom rung. But hey, that's just my opinion. And you asked for it, by putting this on Critique.

If the criticism had been levelled at the actual sketch rather then my loyalties, motivations, etc. or what some saw as perceived attacks on innocent Newsjack contributors, then I could have left it at that.

But that didn't happen, so I responded.

Yes it was snide - it was a parody of a typical Newsjack sketch - piss takes are often by their very nature a bit 'snidey', so I agree with your appraisal.

Others have said it wasn't funny, which is cool, but then they started to throw in personal remarks, so I kind of discounted them. (BTW I prefer the word subversive to snide, it sounds a bit cooler)Cool

I don't think it was too long as a sketch, it came in under 3 pages.

Thank you all for having a read. :)
