Not Going Out - Series 2 Page 22

Teary If I wanted to be insulted I would go to the hair dressers

Once again enjoyed tonights episode. Seemed to be focused more on the character development this week, with Lucy and Lee's relationship growing somewhat, which was nice to see. I also think that when this show is over that Lee shouldn't get the girl or maybe even decides he doesn't want the girl, it would be a good take on the whole "will they? won't they?" angle.

Anyway...Magnum or Cornetto?

But if they did that then all the takes will be used up :(

Cornetto. Duh.
But I'd prefer a Fab to be honest.
Was great this week again. Surely, even the non cleaner fans liked her in this one...?

non cleaner fans

Thats a broken hoover isn't it?

i like the fact that they draw attention to faults in the logic of the script, lee must of asked the cleaner about 4/5 times why she was in the flat for no apparent reason. alot of shows would have bottled this. needs more tim vine again though.

this is the best sitcom on mainstream tv at the mo.

Definitely a better episode than last week. I thought that the cleaner character worked better as they, 1 pratfall aside, mostly concentrated on verbal comedy. Glad to see Tim Vine making more appearances (although perhaps still not quite enough) and Guy's absence helped things as well.

The one negative for me was that the jokes about Guy being old now feel so tired. They are (essentially) the same every week and I hope that character will depart soon. I definitely wouldn't have Lee getting together with Lucy as if they got on it would pretty much end the humour. Instead I'd have her dating various other people and bringing friends back to the flat so that the jokes could change from week to week and I also think that her sibling relationship with Tim could be explored more.

The good: Lee's date was a good character, well acted, and Lee's reactions to her were more subtle than usual.
Tim Vine got to do some Tim Vine puns!!!
The speed dating scene - lots of nice funny comedy moments.
Lee's character overall being more human and less of a joke machine. His acting was very good as well.

The bad: Tim and Lee barely on screen together.
The cleaner - lame jokes all around. Her date with Tim was a total waste of screen time.
Lucy suddenly being more interested in Lee. Why, for pete's sake?

The whole Lucy situation is a millstone around the neck of this series. Get rid of her pronto, let her marry Guy and become an attraction in his Thai series of sex joints where women do weird things with bottles, cigarettes, bananas and blow pipe darts. Serves her right.

And then have series 3 be about Lee and Tim and their misadventures. With rotating (would-be?) girlfriends for a while.

Overall I liked season 1 more, I think - more highlights and apart from the first episode, where the series wass still trying to find its feet, no disappointments.

It was pretty good. The idea of Lee doing speed dating was probably better than the script. Could he have bumped into the woman he didn't speak with again perhaps?

His date reminded me of Alice from Vicar from Dibley, and she did pretty well, but I don't think you can overuse thick characters. I think you need them to say normal things as well.

i pretty much agree with everyone else.
really enjoyed the episode. you can pick problems with anything and you could find things in last night's show to change but overall it was just a really funny half hour of good comedy.

Does anyone else feel there are elements of the old 'Police Squad' type of humour creeping in? When Barabara walked off shot and crashed into stuff, it reminded me of the 'oh and Frank, I'd watch my step if I were you' line off P.S.
Andrew, I was wondering if your writing has been influenced by this at all?

Many Thanks

Stan

PS another great episode!

Laughing out loud I've had a shandy and i'm drunk enough to do it with the cleaner :S

But the question is, could she ever be drunk enough to do it with you?

Well I wouldn't quite have said 'liked', but yes, certainly a lot better. Enjoyed her character when in the non-cleaning capacity.

Anyway, I really enjoyed it. Great feeling to that ep, I thought. Lots of laughs too, which is of course crucial!

But Andrew, I'd just like to request more visual gags! The scene in series one with Lee outside the window, dressed up as a something (kangaroo? gorilla? I forget) was very very funny. Nothing wrong with the wordplay of course, but a few more of those visual-types would be fantabulous! :D

I also see lots of influence of Police Squad style humour in it, think that's one of the reasons I like this show so much as I love that type of humour, proper jokes that come thick and fast, it makes a change to the current climate of comedy. There's a similar gag to that one in my sitcom script that I recently sent off, where the guy goes "I won't stand by and watch my business come crashing down around me"...then you hear a car crash into the welcome sign outside which he then goes outside and stands-by the mess.

And I'm afraid I still don't like the cleaner character, I feel like she is the anchor bringing the show down, the best episode of this series was the one she wasn't in. I feel she just isn't required and I'm quite frankly sick of Miranda Hart turning up in everything playing that same style over and over again, she can't act and isn't funny. (my opinion etc etc)

Lots of good gags this week, well done.

:D
