I may be wrong, but didn't JR pretty much create the friday night chatshow back in the eighties with The Last Resort. Can't remember anyone doing it before him.

Apart from most of the major American networks and even our own Russell Harty throughout the '70's on ITV...

I was talking about in Britain. What Ross did was take the Letterman format and make it work in this country.

Yeah, he was called David Letterman. Basically, Danny Baker watched the show and thought 'I know, let's rip it off completely!' and was thusly hailed as a showbiz genius of orginiality for 're-invtenting' the chat show format.
I don't wish to explode the myth or anything, but for a late night chat show, you just need a host, some chairs and a few showbiz guests, because bascially, that's what it is.
Terry Wogan, Des O'Connor, Chris Evans, Johnny Ross - it's all the same shit. The only ones who did it with any kind of originality were Vic and Bob. When they asked Damon Hill about having a poo during a race still lives vividly in my memory.

EDIT: Sorry Chip, just saw you add this.

This reminds me of a thread a while back when you told me a word didn't exist because you hadn't heard of it...
That doesn't sound like me at all.
Quote: Mark @ January 8 2010, 3:47 PM GMTMy only guess is they think Norton is a bit too rude or not mainstream enough to take over the BBC's biggest chat show.
Why would they want anyone to "take over" a chat show? Chat shows are rubbish.

They may well be, but they're relatively cheap and pull in pretty sized audiences.
I quite liked his chat show style, him being a bit irreverant and can't deny he had many top celebs appear, but I do prefer the type of chat shows where theres a bit more of an indepth chat going on and less of the flivirous japes as its a waste of a good guest if the host takes centre stage which I think Ross did. Id like to see someone more low key....think David Tennant or Dermot o Leary would be good or better still David Walliams or his mate Matt Lucas
Dermot O'Leary is utterly without charm or personality. A cardborad box would be more exciting (you could build a fort, or wtite 'arse!' on it).
I read on Digital Spy (I know that makes me sad) that someone suggested Johnny Vaughan.
I'm going to get that box... and a marker pen.
They're mentioning Michael McIntyre too.
I fear for the Saturday show and suspect they'll just go for stunt casting. As for the TV show, perhaps one of the new breaed of talented young interviewers, like Charlotte Church? Or Lilly Allen?
My vote would be with Mr Chris Evans...
My vote would go to the guy from Inverness.
Just like shandonbelle, I put forward Dermot O'Leary's name as well. He is very professional, everyone knows him and he's a 'safe pair of hands', which is what the Beeb wants now.
But at the end of the day, does it really matter? Talk shows are basically long adverts for celebrities to shill their crap. They should film them all at the QVC studios.
