It's more understandable if you present it as a contract, rather than comparing it to a prison sentence.

It's a little of both. At least it seems that way sometimes.

In England, it always seems like the boys that joined the forces were the really thick ones who couldn't have succeeded anywhere else.
Maybe that's just where I was from!

Isn't your Dad... or am I wrong?

Oh bugger...

Forget I said anything!!

(I never think of the navy as 'the forces'! When my dad was in all he did was laze around on foreign beaches.)

I heard otherwise, enlisted troops on average were less intelligent, true of many armys around the world actually.

Definitely not true here. The military has a higher percentage of high school graduates than then general public and most enlistees take advantage of free/cheap university classes while in uniform and generous tuition assistance programs after they leave the service.

If I were an employer and I had to choose between a former soldier/sailor/Marine/airman and a kid off the street I'd choose the veteran every time. They tend to be brighter, easier to lead, more conscientious and far more self-confident than other people their age.

Well you also get all the posh boys from private schools where they're forced to do CCF. And then there's the recruits from areas that have really low unemployment and don;t have many other options.

And can kill any of you're Towel headed competitors who get a bit iffy.

To be honest, when I was at school I only knew of about 4 boys who joined the army. One was really posh and became an army doctor, and the other three were from the crap school and were thick.

About 1 in 5 adult men in the United States is a veteran, so there were probably 30 or 40 enlistees in my graduating class of 250.

I went to Essex University and the soldiers I saw from the local barracks weren't very good adverts for the army.

Another stereotype blown.

I understand US Army is a popular choice for many graduates.

Bit different here of my class of about 30 only 2 people joined, one wasn't completely retarded and the other was so retarded it wasn't true.

The same is true here, people tend to be more inclined to employee people who have been in the forces, my manager was ex-riflemen, he was only there a couple of years, but he's a smart cookie and is a good leader.

It's not a right, it's the law.

Well there we go, why would I want to give up the right by entering into such a thing? One of the maaaany reason why I'm not an ideal candidate to sign up!

It's true of anyone I know who's been in the army! :D (Including family members!!)

easier to lead,

Well quite.

I just don't get the desire to join such a thing. I'm sure others must get something out of it. I don't know what though. :D

Some people I know who were considered 'backward' and in 'remedial' classes at school are amongst the highest earners I personally know (and that includes people with professional post-graduate qualifications.)
