I always laugh at the mention of Darling as I have a cousin named Darlene who ended up being legally named Darling after her mom tried to fill out the paperwork in the hospital while still doped up on pain killers from a long delivery.

I do smirk every time they call him Darling, but I think it's more Atkinson's and Fry's delivery of the line, rather than the joke itself.
Do you remember the name of the Dave Spikey character in the forgotten sitcom 'Dead Man Weds' Gordon Garden. That one was milked throughout the mediocre series aswell.
