Grant Naylor

Sorry if there's already a thread on these guys, but does anyone know why they just suddenly stopped working with each other?

I've just finished watching Red Dwarf 6 having worked my way through all the other series'. Really been enjoying them. Doug Naylor chats on all the DVD extras referencing Rob Grant with no hint of malice. I understand Grant left after series 6 and has completely washed his hands of the series. That's a damn shame. Think they had a kind of Lennon McCartney thing going on for a while there.

Anyone got any more information?

Cheers!

I did watch the Comedy connections the other day.
But they just glossed over it
I think they said that Robert Grant just wanted to do other things.

Hope that helps

The fact is though, Red Dwarf went downhill bigtime after they split.

Yeah, Lennon McCartney, now there was a writer. Wrote some of the best episodes of Oh No It's Selwyn Froggit that guy. Pleased

That's what I heard too. Supposed to be amicable, but I don't believe they appear together on any of the Red Dwarf DVD extras.

Is Robert Grant even on the DVDs?

They don't on the ones I've been watching. In fact Rob doesn't appear at all. Weird to just completely dis-own it. Would have been great to hear his insights.

I can only think he wanted to establish himself on his own. And you have to give him credit for walking away a show as popular as Red Dwarf.

I do it every time it comes on telly, Ben, so where's my credit then?

I believe it is located in the depths of BBC Three.

Ah. I'll get back to you on this once I've worked out what it means. Errr

If anyone's interested, you can listen-again to :
"Sketch comedy show by Red Dwarf writers Rob Grant and Doug Naylor."

I think they are both on the Red Dwarf: Bodysnatcher collection together. I've not actually watched it yet so can't confirm but think it was them together for the first time since the split.

Don't think there was any real malice (maybe a bit pissed off he was leaving but no more than that).

When they split it seemed to me that Doug Naylor had all the sci-fi ideas and Rob Grant was the funnier of the two. Certainly if you read their respective books (Last Human and Backwards) that's what it felt like.

EDIT: Yeah, they are.

I find the Rob Grant thing very weird. It feels almost like he's ashamed or something. I mean, why isn't he in all those documentaries on the DVD's? It's odd.

Considering they split up and don't want anything to do with each other in the context of their most famous work, then it's not so much 'kinda' but exactly a Lennon / McCartney thing going on.
:D

I wonder if either of them try to get any new shows of the ground these days? I remember 'The 10%ers', and 'The Strangerers', but they were both a long time ago now.

Rob Grant's trying his hand at stand-up now. Plus he's written three non-Dwarf novels.
