Big Top Page 19

I've just watched the forthcoming episode of Big Top ('Skydiver') on BBC iPlayer and it contains a few sequences shot on location in a town centre.

For the few minutes the show is away from the studio, it is transformed out of all recognition into a perfectly good sitcom.

In the street, the usual gut-busting barrage of jokes is halted temporarily and replaced by character comedy and situational comedy and it's actually very funny - until they go back to the studio when the same old characterless crap is rammed down down our throats again until we want to vomit.

I can only hope more future episodes contain location scenes.

Shall watch with interest. But if you're bulling Ming I'm coming around your house with a bucket of Flash.

How can it be the episode that was scheduled to be on last week? That was broadcast. The Skydiver episode is scheduled for this week, but it's already on iPlayer.

Though when I looked it was only available to watch as a HD show.

The BBC swapped the broadcast order around for some reason, so 'Skydiver' should have beem shown last week but wasn't.

the weirdos, maybe they thought it make it better :|

Just watched the episode with the skydiver with my daughter. I get the feeling this was written as the first episode; there's a joke about Ruth Madoc's dog that expects the audience not to know she's a dog trainer and it's explained that the clowns are family and why Amanda Holden is running the circus.

I finally got around to watching this and it is by no means the train crash I had been lead to believe. The general look and feel are unappealing, but that is probably inevitable given the circus location. There are though actual funny lines, and perhaps this makes me hopelessly retro, but I like funny lines in a sitcom - so long as they can be delivered convincingly in character. Which is where the problem starts. Tony Robinson's comic timing is spot on, and Thomson and Thompson do well enough, but Bruce McKinnon could have done with spending less time working on his accent and more time working on his character, and I am afraid that Amanda Holden just does not have a funny bone in her (admittedly luscious) body. As she is the lynchpin, this is a problem. I can imagine the show working much better with a genuine funny woman such as Sally Philips in the lead.

The Beeb keep doing this with shows; it really smacks of a lack of confidence in the product.

Agreed. She should be used to it, being a judge on Britian's Got Talent, another talentless circus!

Scheduled episodes 2 and 3 were swapped, yes. However, I believe that the show has been previewing on iPlayer beforehand.

I laughed for the first time at it last night. Twice.

They were only small titters though.
