Apologies Godot. (But have you ever imagined how f**king annoying and patronising it might be to women when the subject 'why are there are no funny women' repeatedly comes up?)
Yeah, but why are there no...
If the people of the world were arranged in order of height, we wouldn't find all the men at one end and all the women at the other but we would, clearly, find that the vast majority of men are taller than the vast majority of women.
So, in the 'which sex is taller?' debate, naming three very tall women doesn't add to our understanding.
With a small percentage of exceptions, men are taller.
Likewise, if each of us lined up all the stand-up comedians in order of our perceptions of their funniness, most people's line-ups would have more men than women at the 'funniest' end.
Being funny might be genetic, it might be learned or it might be a combination of both.
It might be that men and women enter the world with equal comedic potential but that circumstances select men rather than women for stand-up comedy.
What's clear is that some women stand-ups do reach the premiership and hold their own with the best of the men.
What's equally clear though is that it's only a very few of them who do that.
It's not a genetic, but a social thing that many men don't find women funny and some women don't have much of a sense of humour. I've hung out with groups of men that just wouldn't laugh at something a woman said, but if a bloke said the same thing would find it hilarious. I've also met women who are somehow scared to be funny, cheeky, rude or swear.

The only word to describe such men is, ironically, not without female connotations.
Ok, I'm on test 2. I have several of my most treasured and recently acquired comedy films/programmes in the wings ready to fly.
The Odd Couple (flipping brilliant in all ways possible)
The Three Amigos ('My little lollipop...)
Blackadder 2 and 4.
Which one of these does the panel think will most likely tickle her fancy? I'm clutching here. Clutching I tells ya!

I'd go Blackadder 2. Three Amigos is variable quality and Odd Couple, though brilliant, is an old film and some people (bizarrely) have problems with old films.

To be honest, if you're looking for help from the likes of us you're f**ked and no mistakin'.
Quote: Griff @ December 16 2009, 3:56 PM GMTWell I can only judge by the women I've known, but many of them consider watching old sitcoms to be slightly weird, and far prefer films. The Odd Couple (wonderful though it is) is a bit stagey and might fail to grip the attention. I'd try Three Amigos. But quite frankly "Got anything else?" is my gut reaction.

Fawlty Towers?
Nooooooo! Don't leave me! *drops to knees in begging fashion* I have no social skills when it comes to the 'fairer sex'. I won't tell you what the last thing she laughed at was, but I'm seriously considering some of those adverts in my spam box!
I'd go for Black Adder!

Have you been to see any modern romcom type films with her? You could do worse than Four Weddings.
Why are you seeing her Roscoff?

I think this may be a good call. Isn't not liking Blackadder punishable by death or something worse. Or is that just on my Christmas wish list? (Rummages in man bag)
Heh yes, if she doesn't laugh... kill her!
It's only fair.
