He's been gigging on the circuit since 2001! He's done that hard graft! He's done Jongleurs, he's done rooms in Edinburgh (nominated for best newcomer in 2003 incidently) - he's done all that, so he's not actually just jumped straight into the industry and onto the big stage!
Did he fair very well on the circuit though as an up-and-coming comedian? It seems to me that he's a very average comedian who was gigging and not really stirring up much of a storm in the comedy world, and then someone in a high place (probably something to do with marketing or "target audiences") saw him and liked him and chucked him on telly and here we are today.
Obviously he didn't go straight from not being a comedian to being on TV, but he certainly jumped a good few steps up the fame ladder and above more deserving comics for no apparent reason in my opinion.
