Why do people say "of" when they mean "have"

I'm sorry - it may seem petty but it does annoy me.

As in "I could of shot the cat".

of a sit down Chavid :)

It does make me want to die.

They say it on Eastenders all the time. But I think it's in the script. They are commoners after all...

Shoudda Woudda Coudda or whatever that Beverly Knight song is.

I blame the government.. bring back the three r's..

and teachers walloping kids with the end of ropes, slippers, board rubbers..

6 of the best

mmm...

that'll learn 'em not to of when they mean 'ave

I agree with David. And extend it to all matters of spelling and grammar. Apostrophes particularly.

I actually saw a restaurant (well, chish n fip shop anyway) last year with apostrophes EVERYWHERE on the menu. E.g.:

Chip's
Chicken nugget's
Drink's
Cod bite's
Battered sausage's
Bean's

IT NEARLY DESTROYED ME.

Maybe it's things that belonged to the Chip, Nugget, Drink or Sausage.

I knew you wouldn't be able to resisty this one Aaron.

PS - have to make sure grammar, spelling and punctuation are perfect in future or I'll never be able to live it downn.

Wasn't it a pirate restaurant and these are the staff's signature dishes?

I think the scripts might say "could've", etc. The rest is down to accents, but there's nothing wrong with could've should've would've (except as pop lyrics).

We should be allowed to cull these people with sharp garden implements.

Definitely possible.

But they do all (without exception) seem to willfully and carefully say 'could of' rather than 'could've', so I feel there's some conspiracy...

If you ax me, I don't care! :)

Sorry folks but it took me several attempt's to get my 'O'O Grade English. I rely on Microsoft Word telling me when I'm wrong.

In fact Aaron/Mark, can we have a spell checker or grammar checker on the site. It would save a ton of arguments.

I've already put in place numerous checks and auto-replacements, mostly to correct American (i.e. wrong) spellings.

If I can sort out something reliable enough though, a spell-checker will definitely be on the cards for the new forums.

Will it automatically replace the word pants with trousers?
