Help with the name of a British Sitcom

I am new on here, so I am not sure that this is the place for this, but I have a query that is driving my husband and I mad.
We both remember a British Sitcom which was set in a cafe, but we can't remember what it was called. I can picture the set, and one of the characters, but not what the actor's name was. He played a character, a welshman, called Meredith. The emphasis was on the RED - Me-RED-ith, he kept on stressing that. This was possibly late 70's maybe early 80's.
Every time we see the name Meredith, it sets us off again trying to remember what it was called. My husband thought the other character (a big bloke) was called Elmo, but I think he is getting mixed up with Brush Strokes.
Can anyone help?

Tough one. Any more details? Any idea if it was on the BBC or a commercial channel? Sure it was a cafe? Do you remember what the show was about other than it was set in a cafe? And what did the lead actor look like?

Is there anything else you can recall about the show? Could it be a pilot/playlet you're remembering, rather than a series?

This rang a bell with me as well, but I can't find anything thru the usual channells on it. I can clearly picture the Welshman called Meredith and I'm certain it was an actor out of The Liver Birds, because I can picture his face saying what you described. I'd say it was more late 80s myself but can't find anything on it. I can picture the cafe, and I can picture him in a wooly hat, but that's about it. I'm pretty sure that something of the kind existed tho.

Ah... this is annoying me. I can't think what it could be. Was it a roadside cafe Sue? And was it definitely a sitcom series (rather than comedy drama, say)
