I have no TV

Yet I am passionate about Britcoms. go figure. I'm only able to watch them on the internet anyway. Anybody got any good sites for streaming shows? I was using a chinese one Tudou for a long time but am terrified I'll get some nasty computer disease. YouTube sometimes rocks it until BBC finds out and puts the kabash.

Been recently enjoying Hotel Babylon (Series 1), The IT Crowd, Jam and Jerusalem, and Eddie Izzard (Circle and Unrepeatable). Have had trouble appreciating Porridge, Monkey Dust, and Catherine Tate.

Suggestions for new stuff?

I'm not sure of the details but Hulu.com will soon be teaming up with ITV (A British channel/station). Maybe they'll offer classic sitcoms from all channels over here?

There's also MSN Video (I think) If you can access the UK version, they've put up some classic sitcoms, can't remember what now? (I think I saw Peep Show, I'll recommend that anyway).

Try getting yourself HotSpot Shield, you maybe able to access BBC iPlayer then. Then you'll have lots to choose from.

There's also Surfthechannel.com but that's pretty much the same quality as Tudou.

Hello and you are not alone I believe, in not 'getting' Porridge over there. I have heard many Americans say the same. Ironically, we see it as one of our most 'American' type sitcoms, in style.

Well I thought we did...maybe it's just me. The style of it being centred around a big joker who got all the laughs and controlled much of the funny stuff, that's typically American rather than British I'd say, but I could be wrong.

New as in not mentioned on your list, try Black Books, Big Train (The IT Crowd writer involved with both of those) and Spaced.

New as in a current show, try Peep Show.

Fair point, yes. But only in terms of the central character then, is it similar. I can't imagine the Americans ever setting a sitcom in a prison cell, nor can I think of many with such limitations as offered in such a setting.

No the content is very British, agreed, but then we're not afraid to laugh at dark things including prison and convicts. Maybe the nearest I've seen the US do it to is Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello, that sort of thing, but it's basic slapstick humour, not getting into the cells every week sharing the humiliating routine of the prisoners. I don't know, maybe this is why Porridge, which we love, doesn't seem to reach the Americans?
