I'm sure I remember Arthur Smith on Radio 4 a while back leaving quite a long silence (minutes rather than seconds) as part of one of his comedy broadcasts so you might even get away with it!
Pffft. Not bad.
You'd probably get away with it easier if you had the sound of a ticking clock and the occasional "hmmm..."

Incidentally, don't radio stations have some kind of failsafe that kicks in after a certain number of seconds of dead air? So if Chris Moyles suffers a fatal heart attack during his show (heaven forbid) a Dizzy Rascal track automatically starts playing?

This has definitely been done on R4 sketch show already. Can't remember which one but I think it was in the last 5 years. It was a man sighing and occassionally "Hmmm" ing. Will try and remember what show. I can hear it in my head and it's driving me nuts. Maybe even Life, Death and Sex with Mike and Sue.

Now you mention it yes, I am sure there was a long silence on Arthur Smith Sings Leonard Cohen. Can't recall the context tho.
I saw a stand-up do something similar the other night, it got a couple of awkward laughs, then a flutter of real laughs, but then it just went on too long.
Personally I just felt a cheated that he wasted a whole minute in a 5 minute slot.

I remember a sketch from Alas Smith & Jones many years ago, where Mel Smith pulled some funny faces in silence during 'Night Thoughts'.
