Sorry?
Who said that?
Quote: IT David @ November 24 2009, 8:16 PM GMTThe last two American sitcoms I watched were 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' and 'The Office'. Both were unoriginal and relied on filth and shock value in order to get laughs.
Bollocks. Curb Your Enthusiasm is possibly the greatest sitcom ever written (it is sort of written) and the American version of The Office is arguably better than the English version.

Filth.

What exactly does arguably mean?

Absolutely nothing.

I feel sorry for you; you've missed out on so much great comedy. I suppose you are satisfied enough with Karen Taylor though.
I'm with the Friends friends. Tis a great show.
Quote: chipolata @ November 25 2009, 12:40 PM GMTI'm with the Friends friends. Tis a great show.
The earlier series definitely. I guess I can understand if you saw a later episode when it was more soap-opera orientated, but to dismiss the entire series (and the entire US sitcom output!) based on that is absurd. That's like seeing a later episode of Only Fools & Horses and writing off the entire British sitcom genre.
What's that American sitcom where the audience whoop and cheer whenever someone new comes on set and where every line gets a laugh when it's not even funny?
not an actual line from anything, just a typical unfunny comment
"Do You Want a Cheese & Bacon Bagel?"
"Yes I'd Love One!"
Cue audience hysterics.........
Any ideas which American sitcom it could be?
Quote: sootyj @ November 24 2009, 8:42 AM GMTJust Shoot Me was ace.
Correct.
I really enjoy Rules Of Engagement too, although I'm not sure he/his character is suited.
Quote: peter gazzard @ November 24 2009, 11:49 AM GMTperfect strangers is ok, watchable, and actually pretty funny in places

You see this who is so much better than Miranda Hart too which it si quite similar. On account of them both being simple vehicles for masses and masses of jokes, but the Just Shoot Me ones are mainly killer and well done.

Often annoying, but passable.

Aw, that was a good programme.
Quote: LAUGH?NEARLYDIED @ November 24 2009, 6:42 PM GMTAnd Billy Connolly's US sitcom called Billy was pretty dire.
But then, so is Billy Connolly.
Quote: Tim Walker @ November 24 2009, 6:57 PM GMTI loathed The Cosby Show. Loathed. Really despised it. Didn't like at all.
It was pretty humour-free.
Quote: Leevil @ November 24 2009, 7:11 PM GMTI like Bill Cosby. White Christmas is a classic.
Quote: Kevin Murphy @ November 24 2009, 7:26 PM GMTAnyone mentioned Blossom yet?
I have fond memories of this, but I would not dare watch it now lest it make me realise what a bunch of poo it was.
I have seen one episode, as zooo purchased a DVD.
It was ... I guess you had to be there.
Quote: Martin H @ November 24 2009, 10:48 PM GMTWow. This thread is seriously shocking. I have seen nominations for Seinfeld, Friends, The Office and Curb Your Enthusiasm and yet as far as I can see, nobody has mentioned Two and Half F**king Men!
Has the world gone insane?!
I enjoy that, particularly whilst cooking and eating a nice big fry up.

Quite a lot of sitcoms are just vehicles for masses of jokes though, surely? There wasn't all that much plot in, say, Are You Being Served?, for example.
Am disappointed to find that Just Shoot Me is not available on DVD.
As for terrible US sitcoms, I shall nominate Scrubs. Nominally funny toward the start, but too moral-y, like later episodes of The Vicar Of Dibley. Just f**k right off. I'll go to church if I want some preachy morally shit, not sit down in front of my TV.

Second that, cold, unlikeable, unfunny and mis-cast
