Tim, I hear what you are saying, but, you know what, I completely disagree with you.
You claim that the average Top Gear viewer is neither gullible or eager to please. In which case, you are suggesting that the average TG viewer is complicit in Clarkson's homophobic and xenephobic mantra. Honestly, I don't believe that for a second. I think the majority of them are Mail and Express readers, dutifully lapping up the garbage spouted by their leader.

No, I think I've read a lot of his journalism, heard him interviewed frequently and watched a fair bit of him on TV. I've never seen anything of that nature. If I had I wouldn't be making any effort to defend him or to question your statement.

I'm pretty sure everyone knows they're exaggerated comedy caricatures of themselves. Most Top Gear viewers enjoy comedy, as that's what it is. I know somebody who's really into his cars, who doesn't watch it as it's nothing to do with cars.
I suppose they should perhaps be more careful, if people are a bit stupid then, as when Little Britain got really popular, the idiots thought it funny to be racist/homophobic/fatist as their irony genes were missing.

As far as I'm aware Top Gear is the only show on the BBC which has an opinion / viewpoint totally opposite to the standard (and heavily nutured) party line. It also makes the jokes entirely tongue in cheek, with knowing nods to camera and sitcom style set ups. You don't even have to be a lawyer to figure out the humour - alledgedly.
Also, seeing them in "the flesh" (not as in the flesh as the picture above) you really see, they appreciate it's all in good fun, and for entertainment. It's the best show on the TV at the moment, they know it, we know it, and just leave it as that!

This is genuinely fairly interesting; every single person that I know would be of the opinion that there is no irony whatsoever either in:
1) The presenter's delivery & content.
2) The crowd's response and appreciation of said material.
Consider this: what would Stewart Lee think of Top Gear and it's presenters & audience?

Having read all the other stuff Clarkson has written (column pieces, books I love the racist, deluded old wind bag) I think he is entirely sincere. Doesn't stop him being funny or entertaining. I just wonder if he suggested killing all baldies and gingers, if the streets would be knee deep in corpses the next day.
As for Hammond and the long haired shemale they exist entirely in his mighty shadow. If he told them to f**k each other in a Reliant Robin they would.
