Sitcom characters you never see

Has this been done here before? Oh well...

Pretty self-explanitary - you hear about them but never see 'em. Might want to add how they're described.

DAD'S ARMY - MRS ELIZABETH MAINWARING (Captain George Mainwaring's wife. She's described as very large, short-tempered with George, takes offence easily at George, grumpy and rude and doesn't socialise or leave the house much. Maybe an anxious person as likes to sleep in the shelter a lot. Wears the trousers. Has no taste - e.g. makes ugly lampshades. Relationship lacks romance. There I go with my long texts again.)

HI-DE-HI! - JOE MAPLIN (crude, rude, loud, aggresive, succesful, user).

Norm's wife in Cheers.

Niles's wife Maris on Frasier.

She did turn up at one point.

And you saw Mrs Mainwaring's substantial bum.

Sam's brother in Cheers.

Arthur Daley's wife, 'Er Indoors, in Minder (which has more laughs than many so-called sitcoms).

The Meldrew's neighbour's mum.

Are you sure you're not getting Maris mixed up with Lilith, Frasier's ex-wife? I've seen pretty much every episode of Frasier and I don't remember the episode with Maris in it.

I could be wrong, so please point me in the direction of the episode sootyj.

According to Wiki she makes one appearance, but I can't find an image.

I remember an episode where the audience were tricked into thinking they'd seen her, but it turned out only to be the housekeeper. Personally, I doubt they would have shown her. She was created to be a character you never saw, just heard about.

I like the constant references to various off-screen characters in The Thick Of It, such as the PM and 'Fat Pat'.

:D

I never managed to sit through an entire episode of Frasier. Too much snide smug.

And back on topic, Mrs Slocombe often referred to her best friend Mrs Axelby, when recounting holidays and chasing men in bars.

And her infamous pussy.

I'm certain there's at least one episode (or was it the movie?) where Mrs Slocombe brings her cat to Grace Brothers. But I'm not sure I'm going to go to the effort of finding it and posting an image here.

Was it grey?

Maris turned up in one episode but silent and covered in bandages, her shadow also appeared in another episode.

Obv. not a sitcom character but that launderette owner in EastEnders Mr Ploppypoppypop or whatever hes called
