Ugly Betty...?

Does anybody know anything about this show? Such as if it's any good? Channel 4 have started trailing it to death, and they're obviously hoping it's their next big American import, but so far I'm completely in the dark about it.

I heard that it was the "surprise hit" of the year, so it'll be interesting to actually see it. Like any American show though, I'm not going to be waiting around paticularly expectantly.

Hasn't it got Ashley Jensen from Extras in it? Hope she'd not associate herself with a pants show. Actually, I said that About Sue Johnston too.

Ashley Jensen is indeed in it.

I'm pretty sure Ugly Betty will be a hit for C4... I'm predicting even more so than season one of "Desperate Housewives" was for them actually.

The reason the first season has done so well in the States is down to a healthy mix of comedy (for the laughs) and drama (to keep people coming back each week). It's probably not a show for hardcore comedy fans like many of us here but will certainly appeal to many (mostly female I suspect).

There's a fair bit of details etc on www.abc.com/primetime/uglybetty if you want to know more (beware of spoilers).

Interesting... Anyone got a start date?

It starts on the 5th January at 9:30 apparently (Peep Show and the IT Crowd shouldn't be too far behind that hopefully).

Hey Guys,

Well the show actually starts this Friday......and some really good trailers have been put up on You Tube...

Enjoy........

can it be as bad as new simpsons?

I'm looking forward to it.
Apparently Ashley play's Betty's only friend Christina, so sounds like she'll be in it quite a bit if you're a fan.

(I'm using Wikipedia way too much today!)

Just watched it and I thought it was brilliant :)

Yeah, not half bad! :)

Truly terrible. Just some lame comedy that belongs on channel abc1. Shame because the lead character is actually quite good. Too long for an hour and tries desperately to imitate the subtle wit of desperate housewives. Also too much music is put in the show all the time, just ruining it for me. Avoid this show like the plague if you want a replacement for Green Wing.

It's on ABC in America.

Anyway, i didn't catch all of it but i found it quite funny and interesting. I don't Ashley Jensen has such a big part as people make her out to have.

It certainly doesn't deserve to be trapped in abc1 hell with Hope and Faith and Rodney.

I enjoyed the first episode. The Yanks are v. good at this sort of thing - slick, well written and good performances. It was a bit short on laughs for my liking and I hope it doesn't become too soapy, but there was enough in the first episode to make me tune in again.

Ever since 'My Name Is Earl' I've been waiting for something good to turn up on C4 and this, I'm delightd to say, was it. Only the first episode but good enough for me to switch on again next week.
